pulled the flywheel cover and flywheel today...man its ugly in there.

looks like there was grease and some oil flying around. besides the bendix, didn't think anything in there gets greased. is this normal?? i'll snap some pics and post them up later. just making sure before i start chasing a leak that might not be there:dunno:

when removing the cover there was no gas smell (if there was, it was not strong enough for me to notice it). its been open over night and has had time to air out...but the is no strong gas smell now either

take a look at the pics, all that gunk does not seem normal to me

That pretty bad with the oil pooling up on the bottom and getting thrown around.

I'd replace the crank seals while the engine is already out IMO.

Just flip the engine over with the spark plugs out, remove all the bolts, bed plates, bottom cover and turn the crank so the pistons are even, that way you won't have to disassemble the top end.

can someone run through the proper procedure for a leakdown test...should be simple enough so i'll do the test before openening up to getto the seals...

also what's the best way/product to clean the stator/flywheel area?

thanks 2slick found it, read it, aswell as other stuff i could find using the search...
gonna have to wait for my new head gasket before doing the test though...

#.0 can u elaborate a little on why the pistons should be even, this might be a stupid question but i'm just trying to understand why u pointed that out specifically.

ah hah!! makes perfect sense...
have three new seals on hand, gonna do the pressure test and replace the seals if needed...will keep u all posted

I'd say unless somebody soaked that bendix in oil before installing it and then slung the oil out and all over, the crankshaft seal is leaking. Use only OEM seals from Yamaha.

what kind of symptoms would a failing crank seal give?? i'm curious...

keep in mind i did not remove the flywheel because i had a problem (although i do) it was removed simply to be replaced with a lighter one...

ummm the worst symptom of crank seal failure would be leaning out your motor and frying it, or it free revs and crashes... I dont know which would be worse
