Do You think this is from age, saltwater exposure, or incorrect installation? Steering hits bump stock in both directions so I'm suspecting corrosion.2019-05-03 14.55.58.jpg2019-05-03 14.56.21.jpg

it could have been incorrect adjustment over time, pulling it past where it should be pulled, creating excess tension.
that looks to be the cable with the blue cover. not sure if that one is the solid wire in there or the multi strands.
I know red housings have multi strands and those are better.
I've broke many a solid wire cable. mostly on my sxr.
bottom line is replace it and make sure its adjusted correctly.
try not to play the pump wash your buddy game, whipping the bars back and forth. that's a recipe for disaster.
I always use extra nuts to cover any exposed threads at the adjuster. that's a weak spot that tends to kink there.

Check the angle on cable there also. I had a cable fail like that with the retainer bracket pointed the same way yours is. I spun the little bracket on the rrp pole around 180 degrees and it lessened the angle it held the cable at in relation to where it mounted on the ball pivot on the turn plate. I think corrosion plays a bigger part here but any less stress you can put on the cable right there can't hurt. If you pull the chin pad and look down at it from the top you'll see what I'm talking about.

My thoughts are the jam nut wasn't tight. Those slip collar quick connects on the oem cable are not exactly a precision fit to the cable threads. The jam nut applies the tension needed against what thread pitch contact there is in there, with it loose the cable will strip itself out of the slip collar. I'm with Buzzard on adding extra nuts behind the jam nut to give the tread some added diameter and support.

If you get a cable from push pull in chico, it will be cheaper than oem, much better quality, and when issues like this happen, it can be rebuilt back to new for 30 or 40 dollars.

That wasn't the issue but thanks for the idea.2019-05-04 10.29.30.jpg

Oem 06-07 is around 120 shipped nowadays. Beefier than pre06 and last a long time. Mines been through hundreds of max throw flatwater 360s, slightly kinked on the pump end, and it's really long for my ski so I had to snake it around and apparently I wasn't real careful so it rubbed through the plastic and broke the metal strands so it's all rusty there. Still steers just fine but am just replacing it now for good measure after a few years. All freshwater though.

The oem cables in squares lasted 20+ years. They are fine for seasons upon seasons if installed correctly.

Push pull has the dimensions. I had them make mine with 3/8 extra throw in the cable over the 05+ cable so even if I ever do slam past my stop, it wont hurt the cable. It was about 120 bucks picked up. He still has my dimensions. He makes heavy equipment cables meant to spend their entire lives around fertilizer, and be used 10-12 hours every single day by a hydraulic ram with 1000x the strength of your arm.

That sounds awesome! He machined all the connections we need and everything? Plug and play like buying oem?

Yes its identical to a oem cable in how it mounts. The jacket is much higher quality and the cable is wrapped with a stainless wire underneath.
