i just cleaned out the water jackets on my cylinders with muriatic acid and rinsed em real well. i hand dried the thing and let air dry but the sleeves developed some minor rust looking coating while setting for a couple of hours. what's the best method of cleaning that off the sleeves...without me requiring a hone.

Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you to wipe the sleeves down with oil after you clean it. Whoops. I'm feeling kinda guilty right now.

i kinda figured that post seeing the rust, but i need to get rid of it...probally use some high grit polishing cloth or maybe just some loose-leaf paper will clean without gouging.

Once a cylinder has been honed and you wash it in hot soapy water, you almost can't oil it quickly enough to prevent that little bit of surface rust. If it bothers you, you can clean it gently with a brass brush with no damage. You'll be fine just oiling it down as is, though. The surface rust will be long gone about 2 seconds after you crank it the first time.

believe it...washed it, dried it with towel, let sit over dinner and by the time i got back it had a rust coat...i'm a believer now. FYI, i soaked the inside with WD40 and then soaked some 400 grit paper and just LIGHTLY rubbed the walls and it came right off. saturated with oil and all is well now. sheeeeesh. lesson learned

So you took 400 grit and sanded the rust off. You need to wash it againg because now you've got the grit of the sandpaper and rust in the cross hatch. After honing or (using sandpaper?) you should wash the cylinder in water as hot as you can stand. This lets the walls release the microscopic particles that are ground into the walls. You will know when its clean because you'll be able to wipe the walls and not get any grime, use a white cloth. If you keep the cylinder under the hot water it will not rust that fast until you are able to dry the cylinder off. An air gun is the best way then right away spray with WD40.
