Surfriding Cut rings on Westcoast pipe?

I'm trying to fit a westcoast pipe on the 750 motor in my 550sx. I have it mounted in but the only way I think that it will fit is to cut a ring or two on the pipe near the coupler. Would a shorter pipe result in better low end or better top end? I might have to cut it regardless. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

-Might cut it tonight, WaveDaze is less than 3 weeks & I haven't had it in the water since WaveDaze 09!
