Last year when we went across the border I just put both skis in the back of my truck so I wouldnt have to mess with a trailer. but from what I heard, if you have the trailer registered and the lights work, there shouldnt be any trouble at all.

The gaurds seemed very cool about everything. just let them know that you are coming up to ride for the day with a couple friends. I had no trouble at all.

Make sure you have your drivers license and birth certificate!!!


If anyone else has any advise to offer lets here it!

If you haven't done it since last year you may want to check the current laws... sometime they're going to require everyone to have a passport, just not sure when that goes into effect.

NO PASSPORTS NEEDED YET!

I just crossed a couple of weeks ago no problem. Also I'll be crossing again this week.

The date for which you need a passport keeps getting extended. I believe it's Jan 08 now. They are also talking about scrapping the passport thing for Canadains and Americans in favour of some kind of updated drivers licence. This is one of those rules that someone thought was a good idea but didn't look into its economic impact.


Things to bring:
-drivers licence, birth certificate. You want/need some kind of ID for everybody in the vehicle

-paper work/title for you vehicles and jetskis. If your state is a non title state do the best you can for proof of ownership.

Don't bring:
-Guns. Don't bring them especially after this weeks murder/suicide in Sarnia which looks like it involved a hand gun smugled in from Michigan. There will likely be more random checks for guns at the borders.

Other than that don't be a smart azz at the border and you shouldn't have any problems.

Last year they did not ask for papers for the ski or really look at the ski/trailer at all. Of course you cant count on that..

The guy was however quite rude in the way he grilled us on where we were going. Particularly when I said we were meeting some people he wanted names and I had to say I don't know..He did let us through though - I suppose they take a tough attitude to try to startle someone with something to hide.
(No such trouble coming back though)

As people have said, the passport thing will not start until at the very earliest, January of 08.

I just crossed earlier this month, and I would recommend bringing the titles of the ski and trailer (if you have one) also. I did have a border agent ask for that on my way back into the States.

Anyone without a passport should be applying right now to get one before FSF08 (not kidding!).
..heads up on that: when you apply they take your original birth certificate, so you may want to get an official duplicate of that before starting the process.

Dont be dumb at the border. Answer "Yes sir" "No sir" or a prompt yes or no. Dont try and be funny. It's like being pulled over for not doing anything, be polite. As long as you are friendly, they usually are. Tell them, you're going over for the day to go riding. You'll be back that night or if you're staying, the next day. Tell them if you have tobacco or alcohol in the car if they ask. Remember, this is another country, not another state. If they have reason to suspect you arent telling the truth, they WILL pull you over and inspect EVERYTHING in your vehicle/trailer. That would not be a good start to the day. :cool2:
