Crank rebuild options?

Building a ski for my son and I picked up a complete 62t motor for cheap. Had some moisture sitting in it. Turns over freely but bearings feel a little rough..looks like I can get away with just a hone and new pistons which I’ve had laying around for ever..trying to keep it as cheap as possible. He’s only 9 so he’s not going to be holding it wide open everywhere and I’m keeping it bone stock. I know back in the day sbt was pretty hit or miss on reliability..are there any other options for a similar price these days? Or are their remanufactured crank for 250$ the best bet? I know a few people who have had bad luck with them but that was 10+ years ago..

I am running an SBT crank in my GroupK engine but I only have 1/2 season on it and I do plan on changing it after this next full season. I think SBT is okay and especially okay for your application. When I used to work at the dealership in Charlotte, we pretty much exclusively used SBT engines for anything that had mechanical engine failure. I don't remember anyone ever having a problem with them afterwards. I wasn't working on watercraft at that point but it was what the marine mechanic did... I can't speak for their long term reliability but they are a big name in the industry and I would hope that they truly improve their products when they see multiple failures. Like I say, I trust it, but only as far as I can throw it :)

i ran into the same situation building a 62t setup only mine is fully ported and bored over by lpw. i was going to go with competitive crankshafts but found a clean used oem crank on ebay. sbt might be fine in a stock engine. wouldnt put it in a built one

im sure theres many sbt cranks out there that are fine. i just want a little more piece of mind knowing im running japanese bearings instead of chinese bearings. but id definitely run a used oem over a new sbt crank any day. what does jetmaniac do any differently than sbt?

Sometimes JetManiac has clean good used OEM cranks. Check with him first.

FWIW I have read in at least a few places that most of the difference in quality between a China and Japan bearing is mostly in the grease. I can say that I have opened cheap china bearings up to check and the "grease" that was in them was some kind of clear garbage. I washed them out and repacked them with actual grease and they were fine. I will use quality german bearings if its something with a ton of force on it like the thrust bearing in my jetboat, but for most things I really haven`t had any issues with china bearings as long as I wash the crap "grease" out and put actual grease in. I used the cheapest china bearings I could find on my cuyuna 428 crank rebuild and am running wal-mart super-tech oil, its been just fine.
