Couplers Barely Touching

I pulled off my coupler cover this morning to install a bilge pump.

The couplers are barely touching!!

It is a 1991 SN w/ a 650.

As far as I know it is the original motor.

Is it the wrong midshaft or something?

The motor mounts are all good.

I've been riding it like this for a while now.

???????

either you have it bottom and hte motor slid back and drove the short shaft farther into the housing or your motor has shifted forward. loosen up the motor mounts from the hull and the mounts to the bed plate, slide the motor back, retighten everything back up, be sure to align the couplers before you tighten up all the bolts.

Pull the midshaft and see how much is protuding out the back of the intermediate housing. The specs are on here somewhere, I think it's 20mm that should protude from the rear surface.

Probably the motor mounts are weak and letting the engine slam back and knocking it rearward.

The motor is all the way back on the mounts.

I see what happened now.

I'm assuming the motor needs to come out to pull the midshaft?

A search revealed the specs for the shaft/bearing placement, but no word on how to pull the midshaft.

Sounds like a lot of work to tap a bearing around. What a pain in the butt!

So if the mounts are not broken they could be weak enough to need replacing?

Insuring the motor wont move the midshaft again?

No way to tap it in from the pump side?

At least its raining.

I tap mine back if needed with a block of wood on the shaft and the bearing housing supported well. I know it's not the 'proper' way, but it works for me.

Kenney Keepers from Blowsion or Wamilton's motor mounts or both will prevent/minimize the problem.
