couple of questions on gas lines

I am replacing the original gas lines in my 01 rn, and the return line wraps around the back of my carbs and back up to the tank. Is there a reason they made it so long? It could be shortened by just coming in the front. 2nd question is about the tank vent. I'm seeing pics of the vent installed 3 or 4 inches from the tank with no line coming off the vent. Just off the tank into the vent then nothing. My stock is off the tank thru vent then going thru a water trap then to the pole. Is this necessary?

If I remember correctly the Return line has to come from the rear carburetor with the OEM 38's because the last carb fuel pump block-off plate has the restrictor in it to keep the fuel pressure up.

I Havn't looked at a pair in a while but I think the above is correct.

my return was setup coming off the front carb (one toward front of ski) but the gas line was directed toward the rear of the ski between case and carbs, and looped around rear carb and put into the sheathing that holds the electrical and other gas lines and routed back to the tank. This loop adds another 2ft of gas line. I didn't know if for any reason the length of the return line would matter. If it does not I will come off the front carb straight to the tank. It's only a short distance that way.

mine is the same way. i re-did it like that for a cleaner install, but you could go straight off and avoid the extra line needed. length wont matter
