300/440/550 Could it be the water box

This is a 85 js 550, I pulled the sluggish engine to replace the crank seals thinking that was the problem. I replaced the seals but found a westcoast engine and put that back in instead and, to my great suprise it was still very sluggish. I am thinking new motor, new pipe, has to be something with the hull I checked the pump clearance and impeller looks fine. The spark looks fine so I was running it out of the water off the hose and it seamed like more noise was comming from the engine bay than out of the pipe could there be a problem in the water box.

Yes a westcoast engine, I do not know alot about it I bought it from a guy on this site. When you say come apart do you mean the bafflles broke loose if so this could be blocking the exhaust.

you probably just have an aftermarket westcoast head....

engine bay noise....
Have you greased your driveshaft housing? where exactly is the noise coming from.....

exhaust baffles falling apart and clogging it?..... im not shure, if that was the case im shure you would hear something loose inside of it. check and make shure the box flows if your worried of a restriction there. I have had stock waterboxes fall apart at the seams, leaking water and exhaust into my engine bay., making it very dirty...
you say your engine just is sluggish...? whats up with your fuel system?....

The engine has a reed clyinder I think he called it a RC51 but I could have that wrong but, anyway it is not just an aftermarket head. I put this engine in the ski and let me include this ski was completely stock, all original. Let me say again there was not alot of noise coming from the engine bay there just was not much coming from the pipe. I installed this engine with a jet power exhaust and a 44 sbn both and improvemet over stock plus the new engine and it ran the same. imagine my suprise. There has to be some reason both engines performed so poorly, must be in the pump electrical box or waterbox.
