Corroded driveshafts

Don't use them!
This old SBT superjet (tapered) driveshaft had pitting. Turns out it was more than skin deep. Appears it caused micro fractures through the shaft that ultimately caused it to snap. This was between a 964 and a 148 pump...

That is also about where the weld is on a tapered shaft. SBT has changed the design and supplier of their driveshafts and midshafts over the years. Do you know how old that shaft is?

I do not know the history of the shaft.
I thought it would still be easy to get off because I use a nut on the end of the driveshaft for my pumps, but I'm guessing it took nearly 200 ft-lbs before the prop broke loose! Luckily it spun right off after that fiasco, though.
