One way to prevent this is to put a small ball valve on the coolant line to the manifold but the other day it occurred to me that leaving the flush plug off and the electric bilge on could be an alternative way to prevent engine flooding. Provided the battery and bilge pump are OK, water should trickle into the hull and then be pumped out the side.
