Converting 91 SJ to Freeride/Freestyle, what do I need?

This is my first post here, I bought a package deal of 3 ski's and parts from Rob (yamakawaparts) on pwc. The ski that runs is fast with plenty of torque (too fast). I've ridden it 2X now :frown: I don't want to do anything to mess with the engine or the tune of the engine, it runs awesome as it sits. I plan to take the ski out to the surf, and don't know what is essential and nice to have later down the road.

Can you guys point me in the right direction and links, and places to buy the parts suggested. Also, if anyone has the parts that I need speak up, I am looking to buy.

Thanks,
Chad
p.s. also looking for a very cheap complete motor for a SJ

If you riding in the surf you'll want the following 'accessories'....

- Aftermarket Bilge pump or pumps. (definitely need more than just the stock siphon) (Can get almost anywhere that sells Marine items)
- Tow loops on front and back of ski and tow rope with quick connects. (Marine store or Hardware)
- Hood straps and pole limiter rope. Not essential but good to have. (Blowsion or can make your own)

As for mods, depends on what you're content with for now. But I would guess you'll be looking for these common ones in the future...
- Pipe. (B-Pipe)
- prop.
- grate & rideplate.
- Footholds.

Many places carry this stuff, Blowsion, 24-7 Innovations, Wamiltons, etc.

Not sure what is all in your current ski (pipe, head, prop, ride plate, intake grate etc... if you've already got it running good with a lot of bottom end for the surf, then it sounds like you are in need of some other surf goodies...

Footholds for sure
Hood straps
Handlepole limiting rope
scupper valve or one way valve
Helmet

check here for some goodies...

Sorry about that, the post was kinda vague. I'm not sure what has been done to the ski, but the engine is an HPT with B-pipe, head, filters, total loss, etc....WaveDemon can attest to the power/speed, I have no idea, but is more than I can handle for now.

What seems to be the best foothold for guys with smaller feet like a size 9?

I am a size 10 shoe size... and use 24:7, to me they are the most comfortable. Each rider has their own preference though. Also, I have never had good luck with after market flame arrestors in the surf... I use the stock air box, it seams to keep water out the best.

this ski is crazy crazy crazy fast! stupid fast. It's powerfull on the bottom and keeps getting more powerfull.

my suggestions:

needed:
bilge

Highly suggested:
hood straps
stock flame arrestors
scupper/one way valve
yamaslut hood mod
limiting rope
foot holds

good mods:
stock ignition or msd enhanser
scoop grate (I don't remember what yours was)
ride plate (I don't remember what yours was)
0 degree bars
shorter turn plate
shortened pole
possible impeller change (solas concord)

Well, the first thing is done. My ski is now legal as well as my "home made" trailer:wink: Hopefully I will install the bilge tonight. A willwood 500...is this good enough, or should I upgrade to a larger one?

Also, can you guys link me to do it yourself threads, especially the limiting rope, hood mods write up and pics (what is considered the best now, is it still yamaslut?), and hood latches, and where to get a cheap full face helmet (preferrably light but efficient).

Also, is 24-7 foot holds considered the best for smaller feet? (size 9)...

Thanks,
Chad

Speak up ,don't kiss azz
You'll need lots of $$$$$$ and time and patience .:banghead:

I bought my 97 SJ for $2500 and put another $3000.00 into it already including many hours of my time working on it .I only put on a B-pipe and MSD motor wise so I have a lot more expenses coming up :frown:

Why get rid of TL? It's already installed and running.
