Controlling mold and mildew in your helmet??

So I was tooling around at lanier saturday. I went back to the beach to get my helmet that I hadn't worn all day because I hadn't been riding hard. I went out for a while hitting cruiser wakes and when I came back my forehead was burning. I looked at my wife and asked if I was sunburned and she said " no but you have a rash on your head". All I can figure is I had a reaction from mold or midew in the helmet.

This is a old hjc motorcross helmet that dosn't have a removable liner. It just so happens that I have a helmet on order but I would like to prevent this from happening to my new helmet and to be honest I dont know if it has a removable liner either.

Are there any products out there made to prevent this that would be safe for my helmet? Also is there something I can use to clean the old helmet because I hate to chunk it ( you never know when you might need a good helmet and a superman suit). My new helmet is a mountain bike helmet with alot of venting to help it dry so it probably wont be as bad of a problem.

Thanks, any sudgestions on a full face helmet made for water. I know the 661 bravo says its for watercraft. The new helmet I ordered is a vigor mountain bike helmet which is made the same as the 661.

Natural Enzyme Action eliminates all watersport odor from wetsuits, damp clothing, towels, etc. You can even use it on your pets to eliminate that "wet dog" smell. This highly concentrated 4 oz. bottle makes up to 160 gallons of deodorizor.

This stuff works.

I think the most important part is not to store the helmet in a closet or in a bag.
If it's in a place where the air can flow through it there wont be any mold.

True, that definitely helps. Sometimes the water we ride in can leave a funk. I discovered sink the stink when I dove. any local dive shop will have it.
