completely lost-engine running with plugs disconnected?

Ok,Im lost as to what it might be. The engine seemed to be running rich so i was going to adjust the carbs and while the engine was running it started to idle higher so I hit the kill switch and it would not shut off. then I pulled the caps off of the plugs and still running. I had to turn the fuel off and wait for it to run dry. any suggestions as to what it might be are appreciated. Also its a 62t stock with the dual carbs. after pulling the plugs, the mag side was a nice brown and the pto side was very black and noticed the waterr from the exaust was full of oil. I just got this ski and this is the first time firing it.

also if someone knows the popoff pressure that would be good as well as a way to test it w/o a tester as in I dont have one, and id like to assemble onethanks

be careful sounds like your ski was dieseling(running so hot it didnt need spark) just on comp + heat.. ive found that sometimes you think your running rich because of a black plug but its actually lean and its just carbon buildup... are you sucking in air anywhere by chance? crank seals good? got any more details about where you got the ski and if it was running then?

i suppose you couldve adjusted too lean and made the engine run away.

how many turns out were your adjusters and how many tuns out were they when it ran away?

btw, to kill a runaway engine, hit stop while squeezing the throttle or while choking the carb, or priming.

A runaway engine is due to a lean condition which causes the plugs to heat up and glow which ignites the fuel when the ignition is off. You're running rich because you're trying to compensate for the air leak in your crank case or crank seals. You need to fix that leak or you will destroy the motor.

Thanks for all the replies but the screws were set at sbts recommended starting point and I was able to see fuel splashing around in te carb. tomorrow I will be doing a pop off test and if I can rig something up, a leakdown test. The engine had been sitting for a while before I got it, I just cleaned it up pressed the button and it fired, revved the throttle a bunch of times let it idle for a bit then this started just as i went to start adjusting. also the engine was supposedly just rebuilt not too long before I got it but sat for a good year or so.

Also I forgot to add that it idles excellent and when I jump the throttle it bogs but once I get past the bog I can keep jumping the throttle and it sounds excellent.

Also indicates an air leak... I wouldn't worry about the pop off test. The leakdown test is a must though.

Could also be to lean on the low adjuster/low jet and idle screw in too much...If that happens again to you PIN THE THROTTLE WIDE OPEN AND KEEP REPEATING PUSHING THE STOP BUTTON UNTIL ENGINE SHUTS OFF... If you do this engine will get the fuel it needs to not glow plug and run on. As soon as the engine gets fuel, the stop button (ignition) will work!

Not that it was your case here, but I have see this happen when there was water in the fuel tank and it got stuck in the carbs. Changed fuel but still had to take carbs apart and clean them out, then it was fine.

check base gasket...had a ski do that and the gasket was leaking and sucking in air from there...It still ran, just a slight leak off both sides. I would guess you have air somewhere..
