Coffmans waterbox

there is a nice one up for bid on eBay (its for a 650 SX) and i was wondering if its worth it? im buying a coffmans pipe for my ski just becuase i cant afford the FPP ( i know the FPP is better) and i was just wondering if the lighter, aluminum, and shorter Coffmans had advanages over the stock heavy SS one. ( i know the coffmans would be louder, but i was thinking about putting an inline silencer anyways) thanks for any help

I wouldn't say the FP is better, Coffman's made a nice 650 pipe actually.

The waterbox may give you a tad more hp at the expense of being louder, but if you add a silencer to quiet it down, you'll lose the hp benefit so you'll be right where you were, just a little lighter in the wallet and with a few extra hose clamps in the hull.

I have the Coffmans on my old 650sx, and from what I hear it's the best pipe for that motor/ski. I believe the Kercher's (sp) is very similair to the Coffmans or even the same. (I've only seen a Kercher head pipe though, assuming they make the full pipe).

I don't think the FPP, Mariner or other pipes were as good as the Coffmans in that era/application.

I'm sure others can confirm or contest what I'm saying.

i dont want to start the FPP vs coffmans thing again, Harry Klem stated on pwctoday in response to the topic that the FPP was slightly better in all of their testing. either way, its 390 bucks for the FPP or 250 for the coffmans im about to buy... with that saved 140 i think im going to get the MSD water injection and possibly this coffmans waterbox, i just want to know if its worth it.... also superjett, i was thinking, wouldn't an inline silencer offer the least backpressure, thus still improving HP? all it is a water injected metal pipe correct?

I'm telling you what I've heard... I myself haven't tried both to confirm. I do know that either is better than stock and if there isn't much difference between the two I'd go with the Coffman's for less $. If you run the Coffman I'd suggest tapping your pump for dual cooling as they tend to run a little hot.

Also, not sure how much your into this sport, etc. But I'd advise you to think about how far your willing to go modding an older ski vs. saving $ and upgrading. Just a thought for you to mull over...... I know you've said there isn't a big market where you live for SUs, but sometimes a road trip is well worth it. :cool2:

I started on my 650sx over a year ago and feel in love with it my 1st day, still switch up and ride it over my SJ once in awhile. Fortunately for me it came at a good price and had all the goodies on it already, I just had to re-assemble.

But when I bought it I knew one day I would want an SJ, but I didn't want to shell out the $ because I've never ridden a SU.

I'll just say I'm glad I didn't put too much besides elbow grease into my 650sx, as I've done with all my prior sitdowns.. :sneaky: It's a good beginner ski but doesn't compare on any level to newer skis.

i know what your saying, and i appreciate the advice, i almost bought a 750, but decided not to in favor of just building my 650 up while with my money now, im a seior in highschool with just a part time job, and this summer i moving to hawaii to work for waverunner rental business so my ski is in my brothers hands this summer (biting my nails) but i will be making some good money this summer and i was thinking id buy a new ski after the summer probly, so with the money i have NOW i think i'll just make my 650 that much better, becuase as my first ski, also my first ANYTHING... i purchased this with my own money and such, i've lived a comfortable life and i dont have to buy the boats i use... however, this was different, becuase it was my money that paid for it, so it naturally has more value than money to me, thats why i dont mind upgrading it and investing in this boat.

the 650SX and X-2 had a pretty good box, right from kawi. i really don't think you will see any performance gains at all going to a aftermarket box. other than noise. the older 440 / 550 box was restrictive.
