coffman's pipe

Non-flammable?Dare me?
Hey,guys!I wanted some opinions on a pipe before I hit the water.I have a 97 round nose, all stock except for an AC pole, solas prop(14/18.5) and a R&D plate.I bought a coffman's lightning series pipe off e-bay and I was wondering what should I expect from it?I haven't been into modding the ski since i've had it(I bought it new in '98) and I'm new to performance upgrades so I really want to step up the bottom end punch as much as I can, based on where I live(NL,Canada). All advice/suggestions will be appreciated and saved as a plan of attack-Thanks again!!!!:hail:

Don't know that pipe but you should see some overall improvements. If you want to improve the bottom end you need to step up the compression. Go for about 180 lbs to be safe on 93 octane pump gas. You can have the stock head modified by Protec or step on up and by a ADA O-ring head. Call Paul at Jr. Magoos he can hook you up on the right mods. www.jrmagoos.com

if you just got a coffmans and are open to all mod suggestions and want bottom end power, ditch the coffmans and get a factory b pipe and a solas concord impeller along with a worx top loader grate.

the coffmans is definately better than stock, but its not booming power. are you sure its not a coffmans for a 650? the ports on the manifold are different than that of a 701.

not to thread jack but when you say protec can modify your head are they just milling it? is there any down side to milling a head?

Oh,crap.Yuo mean I have to pull that thing off again and check the ports?:banghead:What am I looking for?

the 650 ports are kinda square whereas the 701 ports are more "polygram-like". its something that i certainly wouldve intentionally looked at before assembling. if it works and makes more power than your stock and your happy with it, i guess it really wouldnt matter.

as far as milling the stock head, yeah, its doable and is a cheap mod in the short run. in the long run, a girdled head with save your cylinder from cracking. this is especially helpful on expensive modified cylinders...... and the ada girdled heads look absolutely tits!

It is a inexpensive way to get the compression up if you don't want to spring for a o-ring head. They will mill and recut the squish for you. I think it will bring you up to about 170 psi, but you will have to buy a head gasket and you don't gain any strength or extra cooling.

the ada heads complete are about $300 + shipping and they protect your investment.

keefer, how much is it to have pro-tec do the mods + shipping both ways + head gasket?

The 701 ports are a bit more oblong and bigger. If you hold the 701 exh. gasket up to the pipe you would see that that it does not match up very well on the vertical sides of the ports. There will be very little contact area and it looks like it migh not seal well due to this. The same is true if you hold a 650 exh. gasket up to a 701 cyl. The gaskets look almost identical until you compare them, so it is easy to not catch it if you are not careful. I always dry fit everything up and make sure things match up before i bolt it down.

If your looking for cheap mods; a Wetwolf pump cone works great for $50. I would also recomend having your flywheel lightened by Pro-Tec, $55. (if you send them a head and the flywheel at the same time you can save on shipping!) Do that and advance your timing like 2 degrees and you will have a noticible difference in power.
Good Luck
