Cleaning the inside of your pipe?

I had to pull my motor due to some broken motor mounts and when I pulled my pipe I noticed a ton a gunk has accumulated in the chamber and B body over the years. SO is cleaning your pipe a regular maintenance item I’ve been neglecting???? Does the gunk effect the performance? And any ideas on the best way to clean this thing up?

Just cap the small end and slosh some old gas or solvent in there, usually cleans riight up for me, its oil residue and sand from the ocean here.

Spray carb or brake cleaner in there.
I recently sprayed carb cleaner in the water jacket of my head pipe (Bpipe) and sloshed it arround a bit. My pipe now runs cooler, I think it opened up the water screw holes.

It sure won't hurt anything to clean it up, I have cleaned mine every now and again and I think it sounds more crisp after. I would say that it might improve the sonic properties because the insulating layer of gunk is gone and the bare metal will reflect the standing wave better. Prolly get you a couple of horsepower. Who knows,

Its going to take at least 5 gals of gas, carb and brake cleaner to clean this up! At least I'll have some bad gas for bombs at Pismo!

Oooh dats nasty:scared:, cap one end and fill it up with solvent for a few days, maybe it will come clean with some serious scrubbing!! It's got to run better with all that gunk gone

Cheap stuff- Castrol TCW-3 from Pep Boys. I've used that stuff for years and never lost a crank. My carbs are completely stock. I never even rejetted them when I put my pipe on and it runs great. It doesn't seem like I could be runnning rich running the stock jetting carb set up with a pipe but my pipe is pretty nasty. BTW its been together about two yrs now and I ride approx 3 times a week so it has a lot of hrs on it.

Wow....

Well, suffice to say i am SURE that your ski will have a noticeable increase in performance once you clean all of that gunk out. It is definitely gonna take a few days of soaking to get that stuff out of there. Is it hard or is it gooey? Its probably going to suck either way. Please let us know how you got it out, and how the ski runs after.

Its gooey but its like 1/8-1/4" thick. I'm waiting on motor mounts now so at least I have time. I'll post the results

I did that to an old steel dirt bike pipe many years ago. I started a fire in the back yard and let it burn down to coals and threw the expansion chamber on the coals and turned it often. After a while the gooey oil baked into nice dry residue. I was then able to easily wire brush it out. I was careful to not let it get too hot so it would not distort or weaken the metal. Not a good idea for an aluminum chamber though.
