Cleaning surface rust and water jackets

Good day gents!

I am currently awaiting for my new hull to arrive. I removed my 701 from my super jet and have noticed some surface rust around the starter, and some build up around the cooling cases.

What is the best way in removing and cleaning this up? Also, is it worth using some sort of spray paint enamel to touch these areas up?

Remove the loose rust with scotch brite/80 grit paper/wire brush then use a metal conditioner or etching primer before final paint.

Cooling cases, not so sure probably hot tanking at a machine shop ideally, or just use metal conditioner and/or salt terminator, let it sit then rinse it out.

If you disassemble the motor then muriatic acid works great on the cylinder cooling lines. You probably wouldn't want it all inside a complete motor though.

Muriatic acid melts aluminum deposits off of cylinders with ease. I'd be skeptical putting it in an aluminum water jacket..

I've done it several times on oem cylinders with no problems. I'm not saying drop it in a vat of acid and forget it. I'm saying tape up the holes and pour some in a couple times.
 
Keeping the motor complete as of now. If it's not detrimental to the performance than I won't bother with it. Just figured since I'm swapping heads and had it apart I could do something. Assuming it's a bad idea to try to scrape some of off as it would likely clog my cooling lines ?

If you've got it assembled,I personally would scrape/wire brush most of it all out with the sleeves covered of course. And then blast out the cooling lines with compressed air.
If you had it apart... Php bead blasted my jackets.

I use a small round wire brush on a drill and run it inside the water jacket.

For the starter, I disassemble and put it in the sand blaster then repaint/re-assemble.
 
Can I tape closed the cylinders and just scrape the water jackets then use a vacuum to get the remains out as well as pour some water through them?

Looks good.

To answer your question: I just use compressed air to spray out all the loose stuff after brushing it off. Take care not to get it into the motor.
