CATS cable to trim ring

Whats the best, strongest way to attach the cable end to the trim ring? I have a bolt on there now that 2 nuts like squishes the cable end between, but im looking for something better.

There is nothing better. I used a bolt that goes in to the trim ring then cross drilled that and sandwich the cable with the nuts and washers. I haven't even had a tiny bit of slippage in 4 years.

cross drilled as in drilling a smaller hole through the bolt so the cable slides through the tightened the two nuts to secure the cable?

Yea, here is an old picture of my last ski. I bent the bolt down so that it wouldn't hit the hull. Then after I realized I was going to keep the trim I redrilled the trim ring.

ok great thanks also you wouldnt know what size bolt you used? I have a 3/8ths but i was thinking that maybe i should go bigger.

Sure don't. I do know that on my new setup the bolt is the same size as the engine mounts. They are not that big. There isn't that much stress on them anyhow. The one pictured above had about 20 degrees of trim and never stressed or bent that bolt. I re drilled the hole in the trim ring and straightened that bolt and ran like that for years. And I think that the nuts are 7/16 in that picture.

i think it was you that asked if my mounting point was strong enough when i was saying about the cable stretching and your right when i looked it wasnt the cable the bolt that i had was so long that it was actually bending it a bit which caused it to feel like it was stretching.

what did you do for the turn cable. my turn cable end is my limiting factor on my cats. I've got some ideas on how to fix it but I want to see what others have done.

I didn't have any luck cross-drilling mine so I just wrapped it around and sandwiched it between the bolt head and a nut. For the steering cable pivot, I flipped it upside down, moved it in a bit, and moved it down one or two washers. It's held up for about 3hrs of riding so far...

thats what i did but it's still not right. does your steering end flex alot?

Flexes some. Doesn't bind on anything though. And I think I got as much throw as I'm gonna get with it...

Mine now looks like Darins above. I moved the attachment point as close to the pivot as possible.

My steering cable needed lengthened so I used a threaded ling from ace hardware and a bolt to make my steering longer. Then I bent a 45 degree bend in the bolt at the end of the cable to see if it would work. Before I cut the cooling boss off of the pump and welded a new one on in another location. The bent bolt worked so well I don't think I am going to change it. I now have 32 degrees of trim and enough throw that my protec nozzle has chipped the paint off of the sides of the hull in the rear. And the good part is that there is no binding anywhere.

Now I just need a motor so that I can ride... :banghead:

I hacked that 4th mount off for the pump to make room for tons of throw. I hope it doesnt tear my pump off and sink it to the bottom.
