can you have to much cooling?

i know that an engine runs best when its hot, but obviously not to the point where you blow up. when i ride hard my engine is luke warm, if that. i have dual cooling with big hoses. one line goes to the pipe which has 2 pisser outlets. the other goes to the motor which has 2 pisser outlets. its a ported 760 with a factory type 4 dry pipe. its got water injection as well with a tdr water box. could i have to much cooling where its limiting my performance?

The pipe definitely needs to be more than luke warm. It should be uncomfortable to leave you hand on it but not so hot that steam rises off of it when splashed. During the summer, if I'm reaching into the engine bay, I recoil fast if my forearm hits the pipe or chamber and it doesn't steam when splashed.

Your water is probably pretty cold year round. Maybe run single cooling during the winter or run restrictors of some sort.

Yes, you can have too much cooling, and in the worst case you can seize the engine if you over-cool it.

thats the same way i had mine setup minus the bigger waterlines and it worked well for me.. i dont think the dry pipe gets as hot as some of the wet pipes because it has water running all threw it

ok thats what i was thinking. the water does stay pretty cool around here. the pipe is water jacketed all the way around i think so it wont ever get that hot. my old riva red pipe got very hot on the top, to the point where water sizzled off of it and thats when it ran best and was reliable. ill need to get some restrictors

hmm i never knew about cold seizure. so i think im going to put 2 restrictors on the pissers coming from my pipe. and ill probably do the same for the motor pissers then too. cause i can hold my hands on my head and around the cylinders all day after riding. where can i get these restrictors and what sizes should i get? i believe my cooling lines are 3/8's

My old engine builder always recommended 120F coming out of the head. Use restrictors to get that. By feel, it's pretty hot but you can keep your hand in it a few seconds without burning.

Jetworks sells some nifty quick-change, quick-disconnect cooling restrictors that come with 2mm, 3mm, and 4mm restrictors.
But you can use main jets, too. That'd be cheaper.

I always relate the temp to something easy, like a cup of coffee that is hot enough so you can only sip it

I have a ball valve inline with the outlet side of my engine and on the inlet side of my exhaust, so that I can control the cooling on my engine. That is what I would recommend to do since you already have the dual cooling installed on your ski.

i might do that Dustin but that still may be to much cooling so those ball valves or control valves sound like the route im going to take. they are cheaper then the jet works quick change ones anyways.

I run my hot hands on my ski all year round then you can always tell what temp engine is at, especially if about to lose an O ring.

Be carefull restricting outlet cooling lines, any small stones or especially bits of shell which are very light, that got pushed up your cooling lines at the pump will get trapped and cause a blockage.
