Odyssey is not a dry cell.
It's not gel, either.

It's simply a sealed lead acid battery.

A ********ty one at that.

No, if it won't take a charge then it is probably toast. The "AGM" or Absorbed Glass Mat technology that most call dry cell is very sensitive to how you charge it. If you have any type of AGM battery you need to get a temperature compensated charger that has a specific AGM setting. If you try to use a conventional charger then you will probably kill the battery pretty quick. AGM uses a recombinant technology that recycles the gases produced when charging or discharging. If the safety valve vent ever opens due to over charging then the battery life is reduced. Also if the vent opens or the internal cells are exposed to air, it will kill the battery. I know that many people have had problems with the latest Odyssey batteries. You might try a JetWorks gel or if you want cheaper try the Deka brand of AGM batteries. They have been working great for me for years now. I use the ETX15L to save weight, it is only 11lbs.

Sorry, in my ranting about Odyssey's I get sidetracked.
I was thinking Walmart Dry-Cells (whatever they're called), not Odysseys.
My bad.
It is a true AGM battery.

AGMs cannot be refilled.

But once Odyssey's bite the bullet, they're done for. Stick a fork in it.

While you are praising Deka AGMs and hating on Odyessys I have a stack of those damn Deka AGM batteries that will not recharge here.If they ever go dead and are left in that state stick a fork in them, they will never recharge,at least with an odyessy its a 50/50 shot, plus the Deka barrety is mucho heavy , it only has 20 more cranking amps than a lead acid nattery and it requires a plastic spacer to fit in the boats properly.Needless to say I don't sell the Deka AGMs anymore for those reasons. If you want a real battery buy one from Jetwerks.

I guess if you let the average joe with a couch that routinely lets the battery go down to zero due to parasitic loads from those seadoo ignition systems you will have battery issues. Check out this article from the Odyssey website about Seadoo short battery life.

http://www.odysseybatteries.com/files/pc625.pdf

Any lead acid battery is damaged when it is left in a deep discharge state for any length of time. Some brands will fair better than others when trying to bring them back to life. It is true that the AGM batteries do not tolerate this as well. Myself and several other riders in this area have had much better luck and service life with the Deka AGM batteries. They are probably not the best, but if you take care of them by not leaving the bilge on or letting them be dragged down by some other parasitic load then they will last a long time.

As to the weight and size issues, you can use a smaller size like the ETX15L or the ETX12 and be lighter than stock by 6 to 8 lbs and still have plenty of cranking power. The size can be fixed with an extra pad of scrap hydroturf underneath or the included plastic spacer. You are right the JetWorks is probably a better choice if you want to spend the $$.

I remember a while back reading somewhere that a guy had pried the cap off an odessey to refill it.

I think it voids the warranty, but unless you buy your battery from a local reputable dealer the warranty is vapor anyway.

My guess is yours is dead though, pry the cap off and see whats in there.

buy the cheapest one you can find, and keep it as a spare/back up.

I did that last year for sons boat, tiny little battery, and it works fine, starts the boat fine, runs the bilges just fine.

It just doesnt have the stamina to clear water out of the engine if you sink it.

otherwise, its a perfectly functional battery
