heres a bump for this build. Im ditching the sn hull (still fixing it though for experience). I cant tell which hull I have gone with though. it will be a surprise when I get the OK to tell.
yummm fresh paint, its actually orange, but looks red in the pictures. Im really mad I went with black on the pipe. I should have gone white, even though it would be hard to keep clean. that stuff would be horrible to take off by hand, the pipe\head pipe\mani\head were all sandblasted and baked everything. and sandblasting all that is expensive.

paint ideas for new hull (NO ITS NOT A RN!)

What is the Gulf logo all about? I'm sure there is a story there.

as an avid ford guy, as well as my dad. For some reason Ive always admired the gulf themed race cars especially the gt-40 ever since ive been a little kid. Ive always liked the color combination too. So Im going to do a themed build based around the gulf colors.

I was also thinking about painting it the same color as our cobra, but that paint would be super hard to match since its a custom color. I never really thought about it until now to do a ski to match the car, but too late now since ive painted all those things orange.

The cylinder\cases will be painted a sky blue\baby blue like the true gulf color, I just have to find a place to order spray paint online.

paint comes saturday, ordering gaskets soon, fuel line and water lines coming, thing motor will be ready to run soon minus a gas tank which I still need to find.

Sorry I didn't read this sooner. Although my paint has a sparkled mist to it, the actual color of my ski is incredibly close to the color of that cobra... Custom color or not, if you aren't spraying it on the same surface slight differences are hard to see and I'd think you'd just want a similar tint if you're trying to get a general match.

Yes I was looking at your ski and thinking the same thing. The color is actually an exact match to the new york giants helmet color (thats what we wanted) The car actually has a LOT of metallic flake to it if you see it in the sun.

But Im going with the gulf colors now. paint for the engine will be here tomorrow so ill get to paintnig that.

bump. engine mock up. paint is pretty idk if it will last. Should have spent the money to get the cases blasted but its expensive around here and i am TIGHT on cash. now waiting a couple of days for it to cure before I start re assembling everything.

Anyone have a starter to sell?

I just scuffed my engine and cases by hand with sand paper last year. Then painted them with the duplicolor engine paint from the auto store. It's held up great so far. My only mistake was spraying purple power on everything to degrease it. The purple power faded the paint.

Media blasting is great but I would consider it to be one of those things that's nice and also easier but not really necessary provided you scuff sand and clean the surfaces afterwards.

thanks! waiting on my gasket kit to get here and have to go pick up some circlips, besides that and a starter its ready to bench fire. which I hope it runs and I put everything back together correctly. Im thinking about baking my paint for a little bit to help with the curing process, but dont have an extra oven to ruin

What paint did you use for the engine and what kind of heat is it rated to? If it isn't rated, I'd at least strip the cylinder, head, and exhaust manifold back down now or it's going to look like sh*t once summer hits and the engine starts getting warm. I know from experience... The intake, flywheel cover, and cases will be fine with low temp paint.

Cooking it in the oven won't hurt the oven. Might make the house smell for a little but unless the paint runs from the heat, you'll be fine.

the orange stuff is all high heat 1000+ degree rated. The blue stuff isnt high heat rated, but I did use a high heat primer before the blue stuff and high heat clear if that really helps at all.

How long are normal bars from end to end? I just bought 4ft of aluminum bar and ill cut it to length, shame that it was damaged during shipping (no surprise) I was hoping to get 2 pairs of bars out of this if they were 2 ft each. Not worth sending back because it was only like $10

I was about to say it looks a little bent but I guess that's the damage. Normal bars are anywhere from 22"-26". I was really happy with my x-metal bars at 24.5". How thick are the walls that pipe? I hope it's a beast because you can get seriously injured if the bars break.

Also what kind of metal is it and what is the heat treating...if any?

its aluminum and doubt theres any heat treating. They are solid also.

Do you know what the material is made of (6061, 2024, etc)? If you're pretty sure it's NOT treated, I can get you some basic data to heat treat it yourself. Even the easiest heat treating will make it considerably stronger.

its 6061. Of course when I go back to look at it they lower the price considerably..
