I get it too.
I think its from the throttle plate shaft bore maybe seeping a little?
mine runs fine, reeds look fine.
But I have the grey gooey stuff frequently too.

if you cant see 10 thou , youve got no business with a grinder in a moving machine my freind! haha

10 thou is a HUGE gap on something like that.
My assumption is that the engine pressure is enough to close a "loose" reed while running.
Most that I have seen are closer to touching when closed.
Id run a reed with a 0.002" gap, not 0.010 though.
