run it for a few minutes, make sure it doesn't over heat. then beat on it. they use to have break in just to see if anything would come apart and if it did then it would happen at a low rpm so in theory it wouldn't trash as much stuff.

Another Kind of related question, after first assembly of a motor should it be fired up relatively soon, just to lubricate all the bearings ect?

i was told to keep the rpms down but keep the engine under load, carving corners and such. i did this for three tanks at 50:1 with the same oil ill run in it for its life. amsoil dominator. then the 4 and 5th tank i started leaning out the carbs a bit and drying out the pipe. now i run it like i stole it after a 2 min warm up in the water.

as far as how long to wait before you crank it up after assembly. i would say the sooner the better but if your generous with oil during assembly like me i wouldn't be afraid to let one sit for a couple weeks.

That's what I did. But instead of warming up on trailer I turned into the 1/2 mile long no wake zone by the ramps and came back for the warm up.

I dropped off a 10 yr old SJ crank a couple months ago and they asked me the same thing. It's nice to find a business that won't try to sell you parts/services you don't need.
