Your problem is that the driver for your graphics card does not support that resolution. Try to find a newer driver for your graphics card.

What model of 22" screen is it?

To get it usable for the short term look through the setup menus using the buttons on the monitor screen. See if it has a setting like "display aspect ratio 1:1", "square pixels", "don't stretch to fit" or something like that. Then set your PC to 1280X1024. That should give you big black bars on the side but at least it won't be stretched out.

Via graphics were usually built onto the motherboard. If it's a desktop you should be able to stick a cheap modern graphics card in it that will go wide.

if using windows just go to my computer, right click, go to properties click on the hardware tab and then device manager button. select + beside display adapter and right click on the display adapter and go to the drivers tab and click update drivers. if your card has updated drivers windows will locate them and install them, even off the net.

if it is an onboard card and it is that old, it will not support wide screen

Not necessarily so. Onboard or not, new drivers can fix the resolution issue.

Heres what the guy who built it said but hes not that interested in fixing it...

You are currently using what is called on board graphics, you do not have a separate video card. It is not the driver that is important, but the type of video card used. I need to research your mother board to see if I can add a video card to handle the new monitor. There is a slot for an AGP video card on your board, I need to research what it will handle. I will get back to you.
