I have a new ETX16 battery on the way, but other than that I have no idea what to check. It is a '91 with a 701 engine. I was told that it has been modded and rebuilt 2 years ago with all the seals being replaced and that it will do 60+mph. Being that I am a complete n00b I am hoping you guys can tell me or point me in the right direction on what to go over and check before riding it for the first time?

Whats wrong with the battery thats in there now?

If it starts fine take it to the water and try and ride. Youll prolly spend a day or two trying to stand up on it and being able to turn and all that. Start on your knees and when your comfortable dont be afraid of the throttle and stand up.

when he says "don't be afraid of the throttle and stand up".. he means that... the faster you're going the easier it will be to stand up, but the faster you're going the more it hurts to fall... so pick a pace that seems comfortable and stand up... don't worry, you'll do a lot of swimming, it's a given... if it runs I'd stick it in and run it.. that's the only real way to find the problems...

I wanna go 60 +

you could check compression on the cylinders if your worried . but if it cracks off on the trailer Id take it out as is. Also you might consider a hool seal in the near future

Is the the square with the wood vinyl wrap?

You realize youll be riding on a woody. Lol
LOL^

It's painted! I thought it was vinyl too. The battery that was in it was barely enough to start the SJ. Plus the registration expired back in 2011 so they must be at least a couple years old? Compression in the SJ was 155 in both cylinders. My neighbor stopped by while I was cleaning them and he used to race so he went over it and it has a steel prop, an aftermarket ride plate and I believe an upgraded carb. He said it should do about 45mph.

I am going to replace the spark plugs too while I am waiting for a battery. Any reason not to go with NGK?

always go up stream and stay close to the shore when testing a new ski out.

x2! i cant blame ya on getting a new battery, you will be re-starting that motor lot the first day if its your first stand up. check/empty your water separators. let it sit for a couple minutes in the water before your first ride to see if the hull takes on any water. once you learn to ride it ok, maybe do a short wide open run and check plug colors. mix oil rich until she smokes until you know how shes gonna run. fouled plugs and wasted oil are cheaper than an engine rebuild. ive learned these tips the hard way lol. besides that id just go have fun on it and dont fix what aint broken!

How do you "check/empty your water separators."?

I am thinking I am going to replace the fuel filter, plugs, and spark plug wires. I really don't want to have to swim to shore pulling a ski behind me. Any tips on how to replace the spark plug wires? I really need to find a service manual.

You don't need to replace the wires...just remove the boot...cut the wires back a little bit, maybe less then an inch and then reassemble. I use NGKs on all my skis and have never had a problem with them.

But if it fires and runs take it out to the lake. Ride around for a good ten minutes or so and bring it back in. Pop the hood and check for leaks. If it doesn't already have a bilge pump installed, get on. You are going to need it this summer! Haha! SNs fill up with water faster.

The water separator is a little plastic bowl usually on the front left side of the engine compartment, it's connected to the check valve on your tank. Yes replace the filter(s) and lines if they look super worn. Remove any existing gas from the tank as well.

Congrats on your first ski. I bought my first SN last summer and left it as is all summer to ride. I would def install a bilge if you don't have one already. Keep an eye on leaks when you first start riding it. Once you get better you can get a turn plate and do quick steer. It is a very useful cheap mod. I wouldnt do it though till you get used to it. I also installed footstraps last summer for a quick way to get my feet locked in. I now have footholds. Overall, just ride it and enjoy it during the summer and save the major mods for winter.

For the bilge pump is there a GPM I should look for or is 600GPM enough?
