SXR Bendix replacement

Every so often the starter will fail to engage the bendix. I think its getting worse but it still starts. Motor has over 120 hours on it. I just watched watcons video showing that exploded engine... I assume its time to change it?

couple of questions, I need to order the flywheel tool.
Can I swap the bendix with the engine in? or should I just take the time to pull it out? How do I stop the engine from turning over during install/torque? All in all doesn't seem like to bad of a job..

You can do the swap with the engine in, but it's much easier to do with the it out! Make sure you install the spring and washers! Yamaha and Kawi use the same size bendix.

MAKE SURE TO CHECK YOUR FLYWHEEL GEAR RING FOR BEING TRUE! My ring bent after 800 hours and my bendix going pooey.

All you need to remove the flywheel on an SXR is a spark plug thread chaser. Available at any auto store.

The flywheel has notches, so you can put a crescent wrench on the hub to hold it from spinning.

Unhook your gas tank straps, unbolt the stator cover, pull the flywheel and you can swap the bendix with the motor in the ski. If your flywheel removal tool is too big, you may have to pull the motor. I have a large, short bolt that threads into the flywheel so there isn't a clearance issue. I forget what the thread specs are. It's a pretty quick fix.

Do I need to order the spring and washer new? Or reuse the old one?

From what I have gathered I believe the tool is m18x1.5 and my local mclendons have them i believe.
