bendix question

Just making sure this is a bendix problem before I order a new one.

My 750 sx, had been sitting for about 4 years before I just bought it. Well Ive got it all back in working order, except this bendix problem.

My ski will turn over, and than the it kicks out (disengages) , but its more of a clunk, because it engages again turning the motor over. turn turn turn turn turn turn, clunk...repeats ... It will start the ski, but its annoying, and I see it stranding me on the water if I dont fix it.

So my question is this is a bendix going bad right?

And if so, can they go bad just sitting around for a long period of time?

And last question, is the only way to remove the bendix is to pull the flywheel, never had to pull one before.

Thanks:hail:

probably your bendix. When it disengages do you still hear the bendix and starter spinning? You should. May also be your gears are chewed up. Just have to pull the flywheel cover and take a look.

my buddy was having the same exact problem with his Superjet (kawi and yami share the same bendix) and we pulled his flywheel to find that his bendix was kind of sticking. We soaked his in ATF for a couple of days and now it works good as new.

Pull your flywheel and have a look at the teeth on your flywheel and bendix. If they look good try soaking your bendix in some ATF and then give it a try.

you can try that of course to save some money at first, but keep in mind most bendixes that go bad look the same on the outside, its the internals that go. You may have gotten lucky, as soaking in ATF is really preventative for them being outside of that oily flywheel cover compartment. Heck, I might try it though, shipping for a bendix takes longer then doing that.

Do you soak them in regular ATF or sythetic? Which would be better? or would it really matter which on you soaked it in?
I dont have any Bendix problems as I have a brand new OEM and like new spare, but just wondering if I should soak them for preventitive maintainence before I put my new motor together...

most people use ATF because its the 'cleanest' and has the most detergents in it of any oils. Any kind oil works for me though. I have a spare that stays in a cup of 10W-40, as long as it keeps the moisture out!

the idea is to get a spare and keep it in the oil so it doesnt rust and stays same condition.

yeah after we cleaned his up it got a ton of gunk that had collected inside of it out. I think his flywheel cover was leaking prior to this. Soaking it freed up all that crap and afterwords, it engaged A LOT easier.

the inside of the fly cover should be DRY and NOT OILY

its only nasty in there when there's water seepage....to reseal it:

use an OEM gasket
generously greaes the stator grommet
grease/silicone the starter O-ring
