i just got an X2 and it occasionally makes a grinding noise when i hit the start button. other times it starts fine.. do you guys think its more likley a starter problem or a bendix problem?

if its a bendix. can you get it fixed or do you need to buy a complete replacement. also how urgent is it that it gets fixed? it still start everytime if i come off the start button for a split second and then press it again.

thanks

I have had really good luck, cleaning them ( while installed) with spray carb cleaner, and then drying, and greasing them.

wihtout even removing the flywheel.

Try pulling your bendix and revving just the starter. I had the same problem with my SJ, thought it was the bendix for sure, replaced it, and it ended up being the starter motor, the brushes were down to the bone. I rebuilt the starter motor with a new brushplate, and now it runs great. If your starter motor is going, you should also be noticing more battery draw and possibly slower turning over.

My problem advanced to the point were it would screech permanently like a wounded cat. Miles9c1 heard it, it was pretty horrible.
