Bendix blew up.....now what?

I was out riding one afternoon when my ski seemed to lose a lot of power. The exhaust sounded deeper and it had weak throttle response. I took it to shore and checked over the motor to see if I could tell if there was something obvious and after a couple starts it wouldnt start anymore, I would just get a loud grinding/whining sound. I took it home and found my bendix exploded. I had peices all over. I cleaned up with a magnet and put a new bendix in. Now after one ride I dont have the low end power that I originally had. Can anyone think of anything that might cause that?

BTW I am riding a SJ with a built 760.

exhaust leak ,blown coupler

Could you have jumped timing? Possibly moved the stator enough to kill the power? Maybe the flywheel isn't properly aligned? If the bendix blew, and now you have loss of power but it still runs, I would think something in the electrical/timing under that cover. Just ideas!

The magnets on the flywheel and/or the stator may have been damaged by the loose bendix pieces.

Why any of this change the exhaust tone,I guess if it wacked the timing out some how but deeper or louder ,I just don't see it.
Could be misfiring, just not sounding like is usually does to him and interpreted as a deeper tone. Who knows.

I usually find that there are seperate problems when customer explain stuff like this to me,I don't spend a lot of time trying to connect the dots, sometimes they don't connect ,thats all I am saying ,we probably need some more input here from him.

I see!

my bendix did the same thing and ended up shredding the magnets on the flywheel and then tearing up the stator with all the shrapnel. when i took the timing cover off it was just filled with copper/aluminum/magnet shrapnel. not fun. was too bummed to remember to take pics when it happened before i just tossed the stuff. yours might now be so obvious but take a good look at the magnets and stator. mine ran for about 10 minutes after it happened with very rapidly declining performance.

i know this thread is a few months old but no one ever writes when they actually resolve a problem. lol been going back reading a lot of the older stuff and if there were no dates on the posts you would think everyones ski on here is broke. lol lots of talk and brainstorming on solutions and then usually nothing. i figure they get them fixed and just ride until having to post a new problem :)

make sure your front crank seal didn't get damaged. if it were me, ( or if you were a customer in my shop) i would replace it, just to be safe.
