I have a few yamaha starters laying around and trying to figure out if they are good or not. Is there a way to bench test them with out putting them in my ski?

Get a battery and some cables and connect it like how it's installed, be careful, it will jump if they work

I put them in a vise hook pos cable to a battery then touch the ground to the vice

Like stated above, hooking cables up will spin them but not necessarily tell you if they are good under load.
Two things - 1 listen to it. A good starter will spin hard, and QUIET. If it sounds loose, or rattley I toss them.
2 - I actually clamp a 2x4 into my vise. I spin up a starter and then grind it into the 2x4 trying to stop it, as a "load test" per say. again all while listening to it.
