Just wanted to share some advise as two friends recently had issues with their skis.

Had a friend who tore his SJ motor apart thinking the crank was seized...it ended up being his start/stop switch.

Just had another friend email his engine was toast. I looked at it and it was his impeller wear ring. It was swollen so much that the shaft could not turn. He was going to tear down his engine as well.

Diagnose the issue before you make the problem worse. Check the simple stuff first.

I had a buddy pick up a newer yamaha jet boat with "Siezed motors" Gotta love 50$ wear rings getting you 5,000$ off the asking price... 100$ later the motors were not siezed any more...

Yeah, I had exactly the same problem. My killswitch stopped working so I just disconnected it and tuned my carb so that it will shut down when I release throttle..

your friend who thought a bad start/stop switch is a seized motor is an awful mechanic. The one with the bad wearring at least could have been stumped by a coupler that wouldn't budge...

your friend who thought a bad start/stop switch is a seized motor is an awful mechanic. The one with the bad wearring at least could have been stumped by a coupler that wouldn't budge...

The first example was a friend who went back to the shop who rebuilt his motor less than 2 yrs prior. It was Vey's in San Diego (they suck!) They told him the motor was shot. He bought a new motor from a dealer's (literally) fire sale in Reno (via Havasu Salvage). The new motor with his old switch didn't work. Bypassed the switch and it worked.

The second situation was a friend I who did exactly what you said, tried to turn the couplers and they only moved 1/2 inch in each direction. I told him about the wear ring issue.

So the moral of the story still sticks....even if a dealer tells you he motor is seized check the simple stuff.
