I have used pipe insulation. Not the fiber glass but the foam type. Works well.

Look for HDPE pipe uses for underground servicing. I am getting mine from a local communications contractor running fiber optic cabling in the area.
It also comes in different colors to denote different services. I currently have a bunch of orange stuff but want to find grey or white for future projects.
