barrel rolling with nothing?

Can they be done? Yes

Can they be done without footholds? Yes, there are some that do them on stock boats with just hydroturf type lifters (Jeremy Parr) at ski shows, but these are riders who's skills are "Pro Level"

Can the average guy learn to do them without the heavy mods to their ski's, sure but they would be able to learn to do them much sooner if they have the ability and the HP/accessories.

I just started last year hitting rolls, but no expert, still trying to perfect them and I am no where near that point, as mentioned earlier hitting the setup wake at a faster speed than you are use to is also a key unless you are running a monster setup.......... my problem right now is I can get monster height hitting the setup at a slower speed, but at a higher speed I do not get the height just faster rotation...... Bringing the two together comes from experience and knowing where to hit the wake, at what point do you drop the pole and tuck....... ie Drop and tuck too soon and no height, drop and tuck to late, height but not enough rotational speed..........

Lack of power can be compensated for by having more speed going into the setup wake.

So is the opposite also true? - does more HP (150bhp for example) mean you can go a little slower and still get it round?[/quote]

Yes, look how slow Malone is going when he does his.

how come all the shows use stock skis?? at least let the guy use their personal boats

Because they are on a budget...and most companys don't know the last thing about ski's...and the ski's are usually just sponsored. Last summer I was lucky enough that both our ski's had b-pipes, heads, props, and even umi steering and poles, and we even convinced them to get us trims for backflips.

For the shows I was going to be doing this summer before I broke my leg, they told me i could bring whatever parts I wanted if I wanted to use them as long as the ski could be returned to stock.

I also thought about just using my own ski...but doing shows every single day takes a toll, so why beat the crap out of your own stuff when you can beat the crap out of their stuff? Also, in a show you have ZERO time for down time and repair...whatever you break must be fixed by the next show!

no, you need more power. that thing you ride doesn't have stock power. :splatt:

thats a good thing...because when I do pull it off it means I have really worked hard and it can only get better from that point on. maybe I will break out the old kawi 650sx with stock motor and slap some holds in it( thereby doubling the value of the ski) and when I roll on it I will be spectacular on my SJ:cool2:

Good point, maybe I should put the SJ up and pull the JS550 out, screw some old webbing down for some foot straps and go for it. Heck I should just go ahead and flatwater backy that thing and then Ill be a SuperStar on the SJ:Banane01:

ever notice how shallow he is.. I wonder if his flat water BF are helped by the pump pressure pushing off a solid base.. or maybe he just wants to be closer to the crowd.

Surf - It can be done with nothing but straps or holds....or neither of those if your cool with ankle snapping

Flat - gonna take a very skilled person...the best real answer to a usual rider.....pipe/prop/head 701

Well then I will just have to go and buy a Js300 and do it just to one up you. no wait a 4 foot long 2 x 6 and a paddle is what I will be pimping rolls with.

seriously- seems like its doable on a mildly warmed over motor. would just like to see vid or hear from someone who does it/ did it before to see what is needed to compensate for the lack of power.

If I understand so far I have getting the setup wake down and hitting it just right. and more speed to a degree but not so much as to lose the height needed. is that it? or is there some more advice to getting the rest of the way around? I feel pretty confident in my ability to get half way even though I am not yet doing it with ease. I have done it- so I know I can do it again. need some more tips on how to pull it all the way and then just practice . practice, practice x 1000.

by the way- thanks for all the help- also no sign of any bs. THIS is the kind of thing that makes this site so fricken awesome! where else in the world can you get exactly this kind of help? nowhere.

look for a vid of a middle aged, slightly overweight guy on a hardly tuned yellow hood paint peeling Roundie doing barrel rolls- in the very near future.

guess I need to keep looking in the NEW TIP TRICK section huh?

Power and Agility
Tricks are done in the skill of the rider. Practice your butt off(wear a helmet), and sooner or later you will get better at it.

As always, footholds and an aftermarket prop on sjs are recommended as the bare minimum mods to attempt this!!!!!!
