i am completely baffeled by what is happening with my ski. Here's the setup: Kawi 750 SX, Factory Pipe, MSD Enhancer, Single 53 Mikuni Carb, 150 PSI both jugs. The problem is that the ski rev's up completely out of water, then once it gets a load (water) it dies to about 1/3rd power. I cannot get this thing to run properly. Here's what I've done so far
1. New Coil
2. New MSD enhancer
3. New Starter Relay (i broke old one)
4. Checked reeds, head, head gasket, compression, exhaust, fuel delivery from pickup to carb, i pulled the pump and there is no hang up at all there.
the flywheel is stock and the timing is advanced.
5. New fuel filter.
6. Carb was rebuilt and is in mint order.
This is the same setup as my buddies and his has no problem. Any ideas of what it could be??????? I am so freaking frustrated that i want to sink it!!!!!!!!!! I've even run the ski with no hood and F/A and tried cracking the gas cap. I've tried everything i can think of including voltage and ohms tests everywhere.

Sounds like when my stator went bad. There are plastic insulators on the pole pieces that break down over time and with heat, so you'll have spark, but weak, and when you give it some compression, the spark will wash out. That only happens in the water really.

Was just going to say the same thing. I was looking at buying an older KAWI and it did the same thing and I was told the stator was the cause by the shop I took it to for inspection.

check the in-tank filter at the base of the fuel pickup. if it is clogged it will starve the ski foe fuel, dile fine and die when you give it gas

Make sure that you don't have an air leak. Sounds possible. When you get an air leak it results in a lean condition. Out of the water it will rev high with no throttle input. In the water the lean condition is worsened by the load of the water relsulting in a higher demand for fuel, there is not a proper ratio to have good acceleration and performance.

That's a "free rev", which I don't think is what he is describing as happening. I had that happen with my Blaster before. Does sound like a stator issue.

Usually a bad stator will give you the same symptoms as fuel system problem, which can make it hard to diagnose and will have you pulling your hair out trying to find something wrong in the fuel system.

I reread original post. Misunderstood the symptom. I agree, the Kawi stator is notorious for getting weak.

If you have access to a peak voltage meter get a reading on the coils at cranking speed. The pulser coil should read 3v or higher. I believe the other coils, lighting and exciter, should read 100v or higher. (not certain on Kawi but these are correct for Yamaha, Polaris and Suzuki electrics)

Thanks guys for the help. I am going to change the stator today.
the good news is everything else has been replaced so i should be golden for the rest of the season.

I have been through two new stators and a new ignition. i have a new coil on this thing and the problem still exists. what else could it possibly be?

Brand new stators or New to you.??

The one I bought to fix mine was straight from Kawi. in the $400 range. This was before Jetski solutions.

You cannot count on a used stator not having the same problems.

Pull the sparkplugs as soon as you can, just after running in the water under load and look for any water on the plug tips. (do this while still in the water, don't run it dry on the trailer) I've had bad headgaskets, leaking exhaust gaskets and even rotted out exhaust manifolds cause this, as soon as the motor gets water pressure, it tries to shut down the motor from water ingestion. Another thing I have done to find if you have a bad headgasket or water leak... is to cap off the incoming waterline to the exhaust manifold and use a vacuum pump connected to the water outlet on the head and suck down the jacket to -20 inches, then see if it holds vacuum for at least 5 mins. If that does pass, then do a brief fire up of the motor w/ a couple of blasts of throttle while watching the vacuum gage and make sure you don't lose the vacuum, if you do... its a blown headgasket. Have some fun wrenching...you might have to get away from it a couple of days and then can become easier to find problems.
