well i have a bad knee(broken knee cap) an ive been off my superjet for about2 years an was thinking of going to a foot strap set up instead of holds.
ive heard it can be better for you knee an i fig im going to have to learn all my tricks again so maybe ill go with straps???
i love the style it gives when you ride in the straps, but my ? is i have never seen anyone do barrel rolls on flat water or off small boat wakes with straps!(i cant ride in the surf that often) does it make it harder to roll off small wakes or off your own?or does just no one out doing them this way?

oh an the lump in my upper leg is the top half of my knee cap

I feel ya bro, I had sergery on my knee 2 years ago and i'm just happy to be riding. Had a torn meniscus (cartalage) and couldn't squat or extend it straight. While he was in there he found a torn ACL ligament, it's still torn but usable.

I healed 2 weeks into the physical therapy. He said one bad fall to the side and i'll be in serious trouble. I think about that every time i put my feet into the footholds.

Take care of it man.

:ugh: that is nasty. How is surf stance easier on the knees? I just had surgery on both knees and don't imagine I'm going to be able to do too much crouching like is needed for a good surf stance. In the footholds I can baby my knees with a good straight locked position for the most part...

I messed my knee up bad as well. I smashed up on a dirtbike and shattered my femur and pushed my kneecap half way up to my hip. Ive got an xray pic of it. Got a like 2 foot plate down teh side and about 40 screws. Anyways Ive got footholds but i just bail when it seems like its going ugly. Life isnt fun if you baby yourself anyways.

i'm not sure if there would be a difference in stress on the knee, but if your considering straps rather than holds they dont have to be in surf stance. mine are side by side in the back of the tray (trying to serve the same purpose of holds), but with them being that way i dont really see how there would be less stress on the 'ol knees... maybe so cause they would be set in more (more narrow and also your feet arn't at a 45 degree angle with your legs and knees... instead they are directly inline to help absorb the shock of rough landings... i dont know, just a thought

 Ouch!... put one strap forward in the tray and do the surfer stance on your good knee.

Just keep the weight off your bad knee and use that leg for balance.

same thing happened to our buddy. crashed his dirtbike into a telephone pole topped out 3rd gear. compound fractured his femur, it popped out his leg and through his kevlar pants. tried to stand up cause he didnt know it was broken and he collapsed. almost died from blood loss. ruin his knee too. gotta pay to play i guess.

that was so gross when it happened. i was on the boat and when we saw him not going to his ski i knew something was wrong so i was like hey guys lets go check him out. right as well pull up he rolls back on his life jacket and his knee came out of the water and it looked like someone put a hand grenade inside of it. it was sooooo lumpy in all the wrong places and right at the joint where it should curve, it was totally flat. so me being the only person who could ski, and i could swim the fastest, had to sprint to the ski before it bashed into a buncha rocks, and everyone else pulled him up onto the swim deck.

i went to the hosipital with him and the poor guy had to sit in the hallway doped up on morphine trying to pull his weiner out to piss in a cup thing with only a curtain around him. every time someone walked by he would get stage fright and couldnt piss hahahha. sorry auddie. that was a funny story. man up and huck some rolls before i beat you to it =)

I compound fractured it as well. Ambulance had to strap my leg down for the ride and part of it was bobbing up in down over the bumps. I got 11 blood transfusions. Seeing white out of your skin sucks. Snapped all bones in my arm into 1-2 inch pieces.

Once you blow your knees it helps to keep doing the same rehab exercises you were doing after your surgery during recovery. They are low on stress, but high on specificity, isolating the muscles, tendons and ligaments that stabilize your knees. Former double ACL and menescus talking here too. :crutches:

Keep on Brappin'!!!!!!!!! :brap: :brap: :brap:

I agree, specific exercises that target all 4 directions is a must for me to keep my knee strong. If I slak off on the exercises, then my knee gets sloppy and I hurt something or it just hurts doing little things.

IMHO I think footholds are easier to get out of than straps. I run footholds.

Sometimes its best to leave well enough alone though. I do too much and it hurts. It rains. Its hurts. It snows. It hurts. 2 Years of physical therapy adn you can only bend it 90 degrees. I dont think me doing a few exercises is going to do very much.

Everyone is different. All I can tell you is that for me, the more I do the better they feel. The less I do, the worse they feel. I can definately overdo it and they will ache, and the point at which that is going to happen has become sort of a moving target, but in general mine respond better to activity than inactivity.

I guess the best advice is to try and find what seems to work for you.

Ride on!

i have also had knee surgurey and am due to go back in soon i have a snaped cruciet lig i dont think straps are the answer for the reason being that with holds your knees move in the standard up and down movement in them but with surf stance straps if you stuff up the like say hitt the botom your knee will move sideways and that is how i did my injury i would say holds and a good quality brace for both so you dont wreck the other one also
just my .02

IMO surf stance is way harder on your body... you are twisted and your knees are sidways to the ski... Not to mention one knee is up forward closer to the pole... W/ that said... I still ride like that, cause it looks better and feels better to carve like that..

riding in footholds is the safest place to be...
