Super Jet Bad coil?

its raining again!
Took ski out today for first ride after installing epic ignition but i couldnt get the ski to take throttle off idle. At first i thought the carbs were in need of a little adjustment but couldnt get them to clean up no matter what i did. After a short while the it started showing signs more towards a bad coil so called it a day and headed home.

I was running the stock ignition before and the ski ran ok but i had suspected that there may be an issue with the coil, so would changing to an epic ignition highlight that the coil is bad more so than a stock cdi?

Im not great with electrics so mabey someone could tell me if the coil is done?

Set meter to 200k and tested the secondary (wire-wire no caps) and got 17.9ohms, havnt checked primary yet. Does this point towards a duff coil?

Almost 18K with no plug caps?
Get a new coil.
Normally you do have to richen the low jet and adjuster with a better ignition curve that has more advanced timing off idle.
 
I got similar readings off the coil on one of my skis while it was still hooked up in the e-box and I know that coil is fine-- ski runs like a champ. I have read they need to be disconnected from the other electronics to get accurate readings.

Yamaha spec the HT coil at just over 4 kohms, you will only get this reading if you dig out the leads and measure across the coil itself with no leads. If you meter with leads on you will get a much higher reading, this is deliberate for noise suppresion. Whatever you read with a meter is only part of the story, the insulation on the internal windings of the coil can and do break down. This will not be apparent on a multimeter, it will only happen when the engine is running and the extremely high voltages are present. The OEM ignition will be far more forgiving of this problem than any digital unit.

Thanks for the reply guys, i went and ordered a new coil last night.

I was planning on phoning u thismorning chris but thought id see how things go with the new coil first,hopefully it will sort it. Im real excited to see how much differance the new ignition has made!!!
