B1 Rear Exhaust

Quick question to all the lads running a rear exhaust-

What side do you run the exit on? I've seen numerous skis with exhaust outlets on either side,

Is there a benefit to one side opposed to the other?

I notice the 701 transom plate seems like it puts the exhaust on the left unless this can be switched over and that therefore puts it on the right hand side.

This will be for a 701 ski so not intending to go down the larger engine route at the moment.

The reason the 701 plate puts the exhaust on the left side is because their exhaust is designed to use all of the existing rubber hose. the factory hose runs down the left side of the ski and then exits on the left side of the pump tunnel. The 701 exhaust is made to the right length so you remove the factory exhaust exit and block it off, then cut off a small portion of the rubber hose so that the hose will slide right over the 701 pipe. Works great. Though you do not have to run the transom plate to use their exhaust, it does a great job of locating the correct spot to line it up to the hose. As well as it also protects the transom from cracks on big tail landings.

Cont........... most of the guys running the exhaust on the right side are doing so because they are running the under the seat waterbox mods, and they usually route the exit to this side due to the waterboxes (WaveVenture and WaveRaider) they use under the seat.

All makes great sense!

In future I was hoping to run the rear waterbox mod .. So I am now in 2 minds.

I wanted the transom plate for added strength and also because it would be ideal for lining up the new rear exhaust as already mentioned.

Has anyone tried flipping the transom plate? Are they symmetrical ?

If so I could install the exhaust on the right hand side and just install 2 45 degree elbows and connect up to the factory exhaust hose for the time being ...

Anyone any experience with this?

If not I have seen the extreme throttle set up but I then can't use this with the 701 transom plate!!!!

Hi Dan, the Transom plates can be used either left or right. If using on the right, you will need to wrap it with the carbon wrap as only one side has been protected and when reversed, there will be scratches visible. Just with your thoughts on running a rear waterbox on a 701, I have tried hard to come up with a reason to do this mod, and can see no benefit. If you do this mod, please replace the buoyancy foam you remove from that side ,especially if its a surf Blaster. http://www.701industries.com/store

Dave many thanks for your replies

All makes good sense now

With the plate being reversible it's a great help also

I'm not sure of the do' sand dont's of the rear box but I thought it was a rather popular thing

Certaintly looks a lot neater in the engine bay

I just installed a rear TDR box in my B1 and my entire exhaust is up the left side, though my box is a straight through design. If you run a WaveRaider box in the back which is also a popular choice, you will have a right exit because of the design of the water box. The box in that case would sit on the left and have a loop that goes over the driveshaft and attaches to the tip on the right.
