Prep is the biggest thing, if your hull is not clean/smooth, then your paint will not look as good.............

I am getting ready to shoot my SJ for the 2nd time, but have painted 2 other ski's also........... but, I am still learning.......

I use a Dupont Single Stage, Dont feel like using Base/Clear............

There are many here that can tell you more than I!!!!!!!!!

Do you have all your equipment yet???

Make sure, obviously, your prep work is good. The better it is, the better the turnout.

I just painted my square, I used a new paint called Ful-Thane, its sort of like an emron, a marine paint. It has a reducer and a hardner that also comes with the paint.

I also used a featherfil paint, which is a thin primer like paint that fills tiny holes. You then sand it smooth with 320 dry and lay on your primer, then your color.

I actually did featherfil/sealer/paint. The featherfil acts as a primer, sealer helps to seal it, obviously.

Try and find a wax and grease remover as well. SPray it on your ski, wipe it off, and use a 2nd rag to dry it. It removes garbage and dirt and grease etc. from your hands, and anything else that touches it. But, you shouldnt touch it after you wipe it down. Its not THAT important, but it cant hurt!

It seems like there are thousands of threads about the correct way to paint your ski. I'd agree with the above posts about prepping. There are a bunch of different types of paint to choose from. I tend to go with the automotive clear coat/base coat stuff and have had some good experiences.
I have always found that when in doubt head to your local auto paint store and have them make a couple of suggestions, they will be able to set you up with a system that matches your skill/comfort level and your budget.
I have used the autoair water based base coat on about a dozen skis and had pretty good luck. I started using the house of kolors bases because I found them being sold for small quanities, the hok stuff is nice because it dries fast, doesn't have to be heat treated and doesn't have as much build up. The autoair is nice if you are concerned with choking out your neighbors.
Get yourself a respirator before you start spraying anything, the auto paint store can make sure you get one with the proper filters.
I really like PPG's DC3000 clear coat, it sets fast and is sandable in 1 1/2 hours, tape-able in 6, and it doesn't have to be sanded if you re-clear in less than 3 days.

I agree with the above as well, I just read some threads, bought a book. And read it .. I did alot of prep work, and I'll tell ya, it really paid off. I just did my primer coat and I was impressed. I never painted anything using a gun or my compressor.. Well good luck, you can't go wrong with advice from Daylight, he is one talented Kat

The paint Ice is talking about is Dupont Nason Series Urethane single stage enamel.......... I use this, color selection is not huge, but but good stuff, really durable, it is aimed at more commercial applications, Dump Trucks, Cememt trucks and such, but they have several Metalics also............ Starting to shoot mine today............

not to hijack the thread, but what kind of paint would you guys use for a cheap spraycan? I want a flat finish, like primer flat, maybe even different colors of primer would work? easy touch up as well for later down the road I think?
