all this talk of hulls has me wondering

I've seen alot of hulls, and with the exception of most sit downs, I always wondered why they dont have stringers in them.

Seems to me you could make hulls thinner and just as strong, or even more so if the hulls used stringers in there construction. something like laminated balsa.

just a thought I figured I'd toss out there.

I'm with you on this one...kinda.
I would think that creating a hull with frames and stringers and then laying 2 maybe 3 layers of fiberglass skin over top would produce a very lightweight and rigid hull. Most boats actually use a form of framing on the lower half. Skis on the other hand have an incredibly thick aft section.

The problem I see with this is all the extra design work and man power required to make this work. Great idea but it won't be really easy. Definately worth a shot though if you've got some fiberglassing skills...

An SJ motor sits pretty much on the bottom of the hull, where would you be able to run real stringers without making the hull too tall ?

it's all part of the design.. it can be done. you just gotta think outside the box a little bit

Raising the motor would mess with the handling quite severely I should think.
Not to mention the driveline issues involved with that.

you dont need to raise the motor.

integrate the stringers to the point of contact for the motor mounts. and use the bed plate as a as a stressed member, there is some space under the bed plate, so you can still make shorter stringers resembling ribs in a baised cross hatched patten to add strength but not add height.

remember ... stringers dont have to be 6-8" high to do there job.

Certainly interesting, but since I'm the one that always has to do this, how in the heck would you retrieve all the little bitty parts that fall down into the bottom of the hull?

i know of some hulls that have some strinngers or braces in the tray area when not running any foam. as well as the infamous hull brace.:dunno:

not saying this is the "way it should be done". for one thing.... there would be quite a bit more cost involved in bulding a hull since they will be more labor intensive to build. but for the Ultralight performance guys, I think you could make a much lighter hull w/o sacrificing overall strength.

I'm talking about the entire hull. not just the tray area.

There is a ton of work that goes into a mold I can't see any hull builders attempting this but not a bad idea.
