Alignment questions

Hi All,

Some Q's about pump, shaft, engine alignment and shims... :

1. I am putting a motor in a second hull. I attached the motor mounts to where they should be. Placed the engine. Nothing fits... is ity possible that hulls are different??

2. Motor mounts have some play before you secure them. Should I play with these? If to measure now, the couplers are apart about 1 cm (1/2) inch, the Yami service book book states maximum of 4mm. I can move the motor mount back, and the gap should dimminish a bit.... help...?

3. Shims for engine: I have 3 thick ones and 1 really thin one. Is that uncommon?

4. Shims for shaft: did not find any.....

5. Shims for pump: my "old" hull did not have any, does that mean I do not need them on the "new" hull? I guess I do need them...??

6. How to get shims? Can something else be used? I am on a budget here...

All ideas appreciated. This is my first SJ buildup and it ain't all that easy...I bet you know what I am talking about:toothache:

first, do not tight the mounts, leave them loose, then set the motor on them loosely. Adjust and tighten the mounts.
alignment is done at the coupler. Do a search, this has been discussed several times.

Thanks for that, and yes, I did a search and found some useful info, I was just scared that my case may be different due to large gap... oh well, just a few bolts to unbolt and we will see... still if anybody has some ideas... let me have'em! :)

i had a lot of gap and ended up taking out the mid shaft and knocking the shaft ahead about 3/8'' to close the gap. put the bearing carrier in a vise and whack the shaft with a rubber mallet. worked for me anyways.

Sorry, my hull is carbon reinforced, there are no markings on it.. I did use a vise and hammered out the shaft about 4mm. It should work... old kawis were so much easier in that area! Just bolt on and everything was aligned...

I always start by making sure the driveshaft is not bent. Jig it up and use a dial indicator to see how far out it is and straighten if necessary. Then remove the midshaft assy and install the pump so you can see the driveshaft from inside the engine compartment. The shaft end should be centered in the hole, if it is low then shim the back of the pump to bring it up to center. Then reinstall the midshaft assy and set the engine in with no rubber dampener. Get the couplers aligned right with shims between the engine and the motor mounts. Install the rubber dampener and you should be good to go. Sounds like a lot but this procedure will get it right front to back.

Well I found out that my shaft is straight, but when I attach the pump and the shaft sticks out to the engine compartmnent it seems that it is too low from the center. I understand that a standard nut/bolt WASHER (of a certain thickness) will work the same as a SHIM? Or is there something about shims that cannot be replaced if you youse washers??

Another difficulty is that I got a B-pipe which fits very closely to everything.. plus the hull is reinforced, leaving even less space... + I have to align everything..I wonder if that will be possible withouth the chamber rubbing against the walls.......

wszystko powinno pasowac, zacznij od pompy i przesuwaj sie w kierunku silnika.
