A girdled head is supposed to protect the cylinder from cracking. Superjet cylinders with aftermarket exhausts are prone to cracking.

so what causes the cylinder to crack?

Yes weight of exhaust, vibration, high compression pushing up on the head which in turn yanks on the cylinder. High compression, pipe, and porting are typically the most prone to cracking due to the increased stress.

I haven't seen too many instances of cracked cylinders but then again...just because I don't know anyone with aids doesn't mean I'm going to chance it.

I have run a lot of boats with stock milled head and never had an issue. Now I do run a girdled ADA though. These cylinders can crack and it's cheap insurance.

I never had an issue with just a B-pipe, either....until I saw my brother in law's cylinder, with a non-girdled pro-tec head and b-pipe crack in half.

i guess i can understand the weight thing with a factory pipe but with a stock pipe, or riva red pipe like what ive got i wouldn't think that weight would be an issue because it mounts to the top of the head too?
