forum skiers, thanks a ton. I love the sport, mainly bc of the people so far! I am least mechanical person ever and I am learning a ton.
About sank my ski...won't start...next steps?

advice now is start looking for a backup motor or get the parts to rebuild this one now. It is a ticking timebomb if you dont get it running on the beach or the trailer right after sinking it. Salt works fast.
Let us know how many running hours that crankshaft lasts if you decide to keep going on it.
Getting a ski running after a sinking should be a process no longer than 20 minutes at most on the beach.

like i said the damage could already be done...id tear it down...inspect the crank if its rusty send it to crankworks for a rebuild...might as well send your cyl out to get ported at the same time...
what happens is your ski will run fine for awhile until the crank bearings break apart...then they can take out the rest of your parts that would otherwise be good if u took it apart now...its your call...pay $ now or most likley pay more $ later...

so maybe now is a good time to look for the 760 that i have been wanting to upgrade. So the salt with destroy the crank? At somepoint the crank will go and ruin the rest of the motor while riding?
I have been told go run the motor for a while to flush it out.

andrew, should i just flush it at home for now, or go run it for an hr so it doesn't get worse. I will probably go ahead and tear down this weekend and take your advice. Any clue what a crank rebuild costs?

also keep in mind that crank is circa 1994 out of an fx1...i put probably 50hrs on that motor and im sure it had hundreds before that....
same thing happened to me when i first started riding...i had a sxi pro, didnt know anybody else that rode...couldnt get it started again...waited overnight and it was sized in the am
it was kind of a blessing in disguised...i got a sj instead of rebuilding the kawi...get your motor ported and assembled by a professional and then all you have to worry about it riding the piss out of it and keeping it from sinking...

you can go run it but there is a chance the crank will come apart...
dont get a 760..the port timing is not ideal for what you want..you are better off getting your crank rebuilt and getting that cyl ported..it wont be that much more $ and the performance difference will be huge....send your crank to crankworks...kevin @ legdrag.com does really good motor work on the cheap (relatively)
or you can take it to jetworks...he can put it in a test tank and get it dialed (although legdrag sent me my carbs tuned perfectly w/o running the motor)..when u are first starting out having a ski that works right makes it that much more fun...
there is nothing more frustrating when your learning than messing with your ski every ride...its worth the $ to have someone else do it for you...also having a motor that as a good hit and pulls hard really helps with waveriding...i try to ride my buddies skis with stock motors and bpipes and i end up pearling half the time cause it dosnt have enough power to keep the nose up when the wave is hollow...

OK sounds good. I think i will just flush it out at home for the sake of doing it and running it. And I will send out my crank and look into legdrag.
yeah I am ready to have this ski running right and being able to just ride. Everyday it's something, but it's part of being new and learning. I want to get back to working on my jump subs.

Is there a thread for tear down purposes? I am guessing that I can just unbolt the top case from the bottom case, and the crank should be inside there, again guessing haha. Got the entire electrical all figured out, time for getting the motor figured out.

remove the head...
the cyl is bolted to the cases...then you have to split the cases.
its bolted from the bottom of the cases
dont pry in between the matting surfaces of the crank cases..there are little tabs to pry on..
.call around and see who u want to do your motor...id just send them the entire thing then they can send the crank out..that way all the parts will go back to the builder ad they can send u a motor assembled and tuned...just drop it in and go...the builder will inspect your crank and let you know if it needs a rebuild which 99.99% you are going to need one...if you call legdrag tell him to port it like mine...motor rips and hasnt given me one bit of trouble...there are also a few engine builders in your area so you wouldnt have to ship it...might want to call jetworks and dasa as well...

Art, the porter and guru is no longer at jet works but is right down the way at blackjack performance. dont have the number tho.... does any one know how to get ahold of art?

Wave Demon, it was even way more of a newbie move than that, after running out of gas, in the middle of towing, my buddy wanted a break and switch so he was on my ski, i think he may have tried to start and had to much weight forward, and he was yelling that it was starting to sink. We switched, got the bilges going, and it cleared the water out. So really a super lame, way to waste money on a boat that ran great on tuesday for the first time.

Andrew, what do you think about milling the stock head or getting the ada head on there since it's gonna be apart anyways? What's your setup? My buddy has a cnc machine, i could mill the head there.

that one way valve in that thing might be bad..it probably 10years old...that might be why its taking on water...i never ran bilges in that ski and i rode it for a couple months so id say the one way isnt sealed properly...

if u port the motor u need a girdled head because when they remove material from the cyl it weakens it...if u dont port it the stock head milled is fine...if you are tearing it down anyways and starting fresh its kinda silly not to port it imo..but call around and see if its in your budget...

http://jetworks.net/ all his info on this page of how to get a hold of him, he is a little slow on responding to e-mails, really good at answering all my calls or calls me back. Art did all the work to my motor, wouldnt have anyone else touch mine. I sent my motor to him in mid march to freshen it up and got it back lat july ( blackjacked the carbs,rebuilt crank,new pistons,hone) one man show takes a bit longer but worth the wait!!!!!!!

Great info thanks. One way valve in the fuel tank or the one way scupper valve? I thought it wakes on wayyy too much water in the scupper. I think it needs a flap like on some other scuppers ive seen.

im talking scupper...its not a scupper though...its a one way valve...the flap is inside the tube in the hull
