Super Jet 93 superjet wont start

93 Superjet Won't StartI have a 1993 superjet that was running like a champ until I went out to the lake the other day and it got submerged. As soon as I got it back to land I flipped it over and got all the water out of it and restarted it and ran it till all the water was out of the engine. It seemed to be running fine until I got it home and it wouldn't start again. It will turn over fine and the compression is almost perfect, its getting fuel to the spark plugs, and most of the time will just about start up but die before it starts up. I checked the spark and there was barely any there so I opened up the ebox and the cdi was wet, I ended up ordering a brand new cdi that I got the other day. What else could be the problem if it is not the cdi? I also don't really think that it would be engine related since compression and fuel are both good. Thanks!!P.s The fuel has been dumped and changed. I replaced the cdi and nothing changed. Should I order a new coil? Ill open up the stator case today and see if it has water in it and put the results on this thread.

I agree with your next step, open that front case cover . Remove the flywheel and stator and clean it, I'm sure it has some surface rust on it now.

K so I got the flywwheel and stator off there was a little bit of water but no rust. I cleaned them both really well and put everything back together exactly the way it was and now it wont start at all. No click nothing at all. What should I do?

I found out that the relay was bad. I jumped the two red wires together and it turned over, but I still can't get any spark. I hooked all the wires up correctly in the ebox and its very dry inside the box.

There are a few things you can try.

-Cut back 1/4" or so off the end of your spark plug wires. Sometimes the ends get oxidized and corroded and start to not pass current well.

-Unplug the connector with the black and white wires that goes from the ebox to s/s switch. Now try and start it. If it fires up, most likely your s/s switch is bad. If it does start, you'll have to plug the connector back in to kill the motor.

How do the plugs look? They may be wet from all that turning over with no spark. How long was it sitting? Getting fuel to the carb? Compression?

Finally got spark, but it still wont start. What a freaking downer. Its sounds like its just about to start up then nothing. What else can I do?

How did you get it to spark? Also is it a constant spark or only when you let go of the start button? If it is only when you let go of the button than it is your ground or your CDI needs to be replaced. Pull the plugs out and confirm that they have a constant spark for 10-15 seconds. Wait a few seconds and confirm they still have spark. I had an issue where mine would spark great for about 5 seconds and than not spark at all...

I fixed the kill switch with the method that is online. It is a constant spark and the CDI is brand new. The plugs do have a constant spark for 15 seconds. The fuel filter is filling up so I know that there is fuel getting to the engine. The plugs are fairly new. I'm gonna take the carb and reeds off and check if there is still crud in the bottom of the engine and take it to the car wash and spray it out. This problem is driving me nuts!!!

That right there is solid advice, I unplugged mine and my SJ fire right up. Instead of replacing my s/s switch, I just took it apart and fixed it. I think the kill switch can get stuck if it sits too long without a key in it.

I really wish it was the kill switch, it would save so much headache. Lol

Yep tried starting fluid, wd 40 and a lighter to the plugs, and a small bit of acetone. I'm gonna clean out the bottom of the engine with some power tune and gumout to get out sludge that built up from not being able to get it started. I'm also going to rebuild the carb. What should the bottom of the engine look like when I take the reed cover off? Should there be fluid flowing in the crank. Is it possible that the fluid is still mixed with water even though I flipped it over and turned the engine over till the water was all out? Any suggestions?

So I think I got it, finally!! Lol. The start stop switch isnt working and the carb isnt sending fuel to the engine. I am gonna take the switch apart and try to fix the spring. I also got a carb kit and im gonna rebuild it this week. Fingers crossed!!

old thread, but for anyone else with similar starting problems, here's a video on how to determine if the start/stop switch is causing the problem (no spark). The lanyard post is a common failure on pre-2021 SJs.
