Super Jet 90 Superjet help please

Hi all. I've been lurking around as a guest for a week or so trying to get the feel for what I've gotten myself into. Two weeks ago an urge resurfaced that I've had a dozen times before... Buy a stand up! So two weeks forward and now I have two 90 model 650's. I know most of you guys are way past this model but from the looks of other threads its in your wheel house of knowledge.

So for these skis. The first one I bought for $700 off CL. It has an aftermarket intake grate and ride plate. Runs pretty strong and has a solid hull. It does have some carb issues that is requiring the choke to be only 3/4 open to run through the rpm without fault. After fixing the other ski I plan on handling this carb issue.

The second ski I grabbed for $300 off CL too. There's a list of items to fix on this one. This ski is only going to be a loaner/buddy ski. So I'm only going to fix what's necessary to make it go forward and turn. I took it out and rode it twice today. It was almost a blast. This is where I need help. The motor will rev high and it feels like the impeller slips off and on when coming out of the hole. There was one time after I dumped that it felt like it wasn't going to stop slipping. After it catches it will start pulling like its suppose to and its normal until really low speeds. What causes this? I don't think the siphon bilge is working very well either, if at all, so there is plenty of water 2" in the hull. I havent really got into trying to trace out the lines yet. I forgot to mention this ski is all stock.

I'm going to keep searching old threads to find where y'all have probably covered this before. If you think of some older threads that could help post them up.

welcome matt--where are you at and where do you ride--i am in searcy and ride at greers ferry around heber--i have 2 1990 superjets one converted to 61x/62t 701 with most all bolt-ons and moderate porting. in the process of converting the 2nd right now. might be able to answer lots of questions. have a mikuni tuning manual--can check your carb diaphrams and jet sizes and general condition of carbs. have impeller removal tool if you want to change those out. the factory bildge on 90-95 superjets has always sucked. if interested send an e-mail maybe we can hook up and ride. and get you up to speed on fixing everything up.

On an older ski like that I would definitely start with a carb rebuild kit.

On the spare ski......you may have a really bad impeller(stock ones are garbage) or possibly a bad gasket where the pump meets the pump shoe causing it to suck air and spin the prop.

I wouldn't spend much time on the stock bilge. Just put an aftermarket one in there.

The slipping impeller, sounds like a cavitation problem. air is getting in to the pump somehow

I went and rode it today. In order for it to hook up I have to hang way off the back of the ski and get it going before I pull myself up. If I try to start normal it just spins out. After I have it hooking up it runs fine until I dump then it's the same stuff. The impeller is stock and looks like it's beat up.

So what impeller will be my best bet for flatwater rec riding? I would like it to pull fairly hard and speed isn't that important.

Also do you all think its still air or could this beat up prop be causing my issues?

Ok thanks.

So to shed a little more light after my ride yesterday. Not sure I explained it just right. If I get as far back and over to the left side and allow the ski's back end to float higher then it will hook up and keep pulling. Any ideas?

This just means that you are taking some of the load off of your pump. You stated earlier that your impeller is beat up, it is hard to trouble shoot some other problem past the F_____up impeller. It could be that your impeller is super wore out. A wore impeller will slip under heavy load. If your impeller is super beat up then get a new one. (You need to reguardless if the thing is hammered) Make sure that your wear ring is within spec and you stator veins are not all broke up. When putting the new impeller in, it will give you a chance to reseal the pump. Then if the problem is still happening you either have a midshaft seal out or badsealed pump shoe, or missealed pump

Just an update.

Pulled the pump out and it was real easy to see that the pump seal was trashed. The stock impeller is beat to crap and pitted out from the cavitation.

Thanks to all who posted.
