90 SN SJ bogs, then eventually goes

It came with a 760 dual carbed engine, dual mukuni 38's. Starts right up, then it bogs at WOT and won't go past 5 mph. If I hold the throttle mid way for 10 min or so, it will go fast. The odd thing is when I hit a small wake, it will usually help it out of its funk. Once I reduce throttle, the problem repeats it's self. Here's what the mechanic jetted and tuned the carbs to

I was encountering a similar problem with mine. Since I just picked it up, I put in fresh gas and spark plugs. Is it bogging or does it seem like it won't hook up like in the case of cavitation?

I had a very similar issue on a fresh build before. Jetting specs were spot on so I ended up pulling the carbs back down and found trash in both pilot jets.

Mine would start and idle perfectly, rev up on the trailer, but bog when I tried to rev it up in the water. If I feathered the throttle just right or unloaded the pump enough to get the RPM's up, it would transition over and start pulling from the main jets and run great, but as soon as I let off the throttle, it would bog again.

Not so much a bog, not sure what cavitation is, but sounds like it might be that

Maybe time to clean the jets ?
 
That's where I would start, mostly because it also forces you to go through just about every component in the carb to get to the pilot.

Has this ski ever run right for you?
It's been a pain in the ass ever since I bought it last year. Piston seized at one point, had a top end rebuild. There was only a small window of time after the rebuild when it ran good. The mechanic specifically chose the jet sizes, and tuned it via the exhaust manufactures recommendations. So to answer your question, yes it ran good for about two days. Then it started with this problem.

That's a very important detail! At least then we can rule out tuning and start looking for things that might have changed.

So, I'm back to starting at debris in the pilots. Mine had small flakes of the paint from the carb bodies and I saw it one other time on a buddies ski as well.

Hmmm, could have the seized piston gotten so hot that it melted some paint from the carbs perhaps ? Or something of that nature? Or now that you mention that, maybe it's my junky air filters, the top pops off sometimes and maybe some junk got down there. Thanks for your help by the way, you are offering insight not yet mentioned.
 
But when I said it's been a pain in the ass, did you feel the common bond and laugh a little? I sure did. It's all love for these things.

I think we have all been there at one point or another. It's been a few years now for me but the memories are still right there.

A point that I have brought up before is how much time we will spend to troubleshoot an issue when it could actually be faster to pull the engine out, tear it down, clean, inspect and fully reassemble taking care of all the little gremlins as we go. This is especially true of a ski purchased from somebody else. The only way to know exactly what you are getting is to pull it apart, inspect and reassemble yourself. That's assuming you have the skill, (or the ability to learn) to get it back together again, . ;)

With a book and the help from this site, I can manage to figure it out. I have a mechanical background, so it should be ok. What you say is true, I'd love to tear it down and rebuild the whole thing. When I save up some extra money, I want to buy another one ( a nice one) and ride it while I go through my SJ.
 
Well I've had enough with this thing, I bought a new one. Now I can take the time to fix it and make it run right. Here's the new toy

I scrolled through some of your other posts and seems you have been fighting this thing for a long time now...in one of your posts you mentioned it had a pipe and you ride at like 4000 ft.

If this is still true your jetting needs to be changed as you are currently running stock 701 jetting with stock pipe at sea level.

It's actually running at 1,000 MSL. And it had a motor swap before I got it. It was a 760 wave blaster engine with dual mikuni 38's. I bought different jets to try, but when changing the jets I mega screwed up and I need a new carb now. Anyone have a dual 38 mikuni for sale ?

Cranck seal pop off? Reeds? And your high screv is to lean for 84 piston. Need pair of 44 carbs or put in your carbs main jest 160 and high srev on 3/4 turn.
