650/X-2 88 650sx turf question

Location

I've researched plenty of turfing instructions on here and they are very informative, but I still have a question.

I want to turf the tray sides to cover what the original upholstered pieces covered. I've seen another 650sx that stopped just short of where the orginal overlapped over the side. is it possible to cover the sides like the original OEM parts or is this going to peel back too easily?

I turfed mine over the edge like you're talking about and I had to re-glue a few spots after the first couple rides, but after fixing those areas the rest is fine. If you turf all the way to the lip just take extra care to get the edges glued down really well and you'll be fine.

Good to know. I will add an extra coat of glue on both areas to make sure she doesn't come loose. I am assuming I should be masking off all the areas near where I'll be gluing to avoid a mess.

Do you happen to have any pics of your turf job on your 650sx?

I can take some tonight. using a paintbrush to apply the contact cement you shouldn't need to tape off anything, but i guess you could if you wanted to be a little careless when applying it.

Here are some pics of mine. Mind you I'm not the best turfer and the edge cuts aren't perfect.

Yours looks pretty decent in the pics...did you use paper templates on all/certain parts? I'm about to do mine as soon as it warms a bit.

I didn't use templates, I just layed the turf in and cut it a little large and then just trimmed till it fit. The only area that gives any trouble is the front where the gunwales meet the dash area.

One 40x62 sheet is enough for the whole tray area with some left over. I did the footwells on my X2 and the tray of the SX off one sheet.

Looks good. I found my original tray sides and dash and decided to just re-upholster them with some marine vinyl. I wound up using the stock plastic nose piece after I filled the scrapes and repainted it. I will only be turfing the rails and the tray. I'll post pics when I am done.
