I went to the coast last weekend and for the first time my ski ran great until the last day. On Sunday I was riding to the beach (down about a half mile of river) and when I got down to the beach and it just died, it didn't sputter it just cut out like someone hit the stop switch. I got the ski going again and it ran fine again for a couple of hundred of yards then it cut out again. I checked the compression yesterday and had 100-110 psi in each cylinder. I also noticed when I was flushing it out (with a flush kit on the trailer) that the engine was getting kinda hot, how hot is normal?

Same thing happened to me this past weekend......I'm looking for new pistons now......You might want to pull the head.

So where is the best place to buy a head gasket and should I pull the head before I do anything else or should I open up the e-box/start stop switch and see if I can find an electrical problem or even run it down to the river and see if it still dies on me?

Get a small light with fiberglass extender so we can look into the bore through the spark plug hole

You might try Watcon or Blowsion for the head gasket.

I bought one at Tri-State (about 12 years ago, it's long gone and no guarantees that they still have them)

check your local gun shop for a "bore light"
they make a really cheap one that fits on the end of a mini-mag light

I still want to know what is it that would make my ski 'cut out'. Why is it that a cracked head/dome or whatever it is that is wrong would make the ski stop like that? You would think that it would sputter and die or that it would run but have no power.

Yes I did, I also saw Phill's ski, I'm not doubting the diagnosis, however I am confused as to what exactly is making the ski 'cut out'. All an engine needs to run is Compression, spark, and fuel. In theory nothing is changing that would make the ski all of the sudden stop running, and still be able to start later on. It even had decent compression last night?

Ok but compression of 100-110 would not make the ski cut out, it would still run but with little or now power. Why would it just die with no warning, if it siezed then it would not start and run again, atleast not well.

Or would the low compression explain it all? If so how?

From what you are saying it sounds just like what happened to me.....and I was told by two people that it was detonation that killed mine.
