701 Engine noise

Have 1993 SN with a 701 swapped into it. Bought it at the end of last season. It has a weird almost rattle noise (lower pitched) when you give it the slightest amount of throttle (just enough to move around in the water) once you give it more throttle the noise goes away. the ski runs great with no problems (no bog or anything either when you pin it), not running lean. ski is running 170 psi milled head on 91 octane. Everything else is stock. Idk if it's just the engine basically lugging around with some load that causes the noise.

Basically I just want to know if it sounds like a problem or not.

Hi I did just the same as you did. 1993 SN 650, and installed a 701 cdi box this season. I also have a strange noise maybe same problem? It runs good at start 5 min, and then it's lugging (sounds like 1 cylinder or only on low idle speed constant, when full throttle it dies.. Maybe the temp sensor needs to be removed?? What to do??

When I ran mine on the trailer in the water with no hood it almost sounds like a loose bolt that's rattling when I give it a very slight amount of throttle. Everything seems to be tight. I havent experienced any driveability issues though.

Is your motor 6m6 (650) 61x or 62t (701 single or twin carb) if you go full throttle slowly does it still die on you? And does everything work fine until about 5 mins then it doesnt want to run right?

yes a 650 original 1993 Single carb, but 61x or 62t i dont know? How can I check? Using a 701 cdi box. Runs good in 5 min then strange sound limited low rpm with ratle sound. Could not upload the film here.. Think the temp sensor is limiting rpms? Water is flushing with exhaust, but engine seems very hot? Water boils on engine Is that normal?

There is So much that can make noise, it is going to be hard for anyone else to say....

Drive line, jet pump, engine (Piston slap, crank bearing, etc) could all be the culprit.

I would take a mechanics stethoscope or use a long screw driver and put it up to your ear. Put it all over on the engine, drive, and pump while running and listen. This should give you a good idea of where the noise is coming from, and you can further diagnose from there.

Water shouldnt boil on ur motor. You may have a blocked cooling passage somewhere.

Yeah I'll have to try that. It's just that it goes away quickly is what stumps me. It's only at a certain rpm that itll make the noise.
