6m6/ 701 question

Going to convert my square nose 650 engine to a 701 and it obvious to see why the 650 reeds dont flow near as well as even the 61x reeds. Is there any way to convert the 6m6 cases to the 61x reeds? Or if not is there any after market option to just put better flowing reeds in the 6m6 cases?

The reed cages will accept aftermarket reed pedals that open more quickly, but don't expect a huge gain in performance. You can build a frankenstein 701/650 motor with pretty good bottom end, though. Racers used to bore 650 cylinders out to 81mm and beyond, with pretty good results. Put a 701 top end on it, and see how you like it. If you still want more, then spend accordingly.

One thing to caution. If you're converting 650 cases to accomodate a 701, you'll have to have the cases bored out to accept the wider 701 sleeves.

Check this out!!! Uses Kawasaki 750 reed cages which work better than the Yamaha reeds plus this puts the reeds where they need to be on a Yamaha 701 motor...

The last pic shows how big you can port these!!!! I also have the billet pieces that you can weld to cases yourself!!!

I think price is the biggest factor here. I doubt anyone will be jumping the gun to buy one as it's certainly going to be a PITA to do this since it isn't a DIY mod. You'd have to cut the case very carefully, true it up to the new manifold, and then weld aluminum which is probably best left to professionals. However, if the price is reasonable enough, it would be something to research a bit more.

Christin's boat has a set of these. I think they are at least as good as a 62T setup.

Back to his original question: The size of 6M6 reeds are the last thing that you should be thinking about at this stage of your build. A good cylinder on a stock 6M6 case will run better than a stock cylinder on a 62T case, even with a pair of 46mm carbs.
